OBSERVATION OF A SCHOOL AS A SOCIAL WORLD AND STUDENTS AS ACTING AGENTS Question: 1. What sort of students go to school? 2. What sort of things do they bring? 3. What sort of activities do they do? 4. What sort of spots do they tend to stay? 5. What sort of interaction takes place between people of different categories? SOCIAL REALITIES: BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON There are times that we find ourselves in a situation unlike other situations. We personally encounter different ways of doing things, behaving, and making sense of events. Observing them, we cannot help but ask: Why do people in some places do such a thing? What makes it normal and acceptable to some people in some places and unacceptable to others in other places? SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON ISTAMBAY ▪ A Filipino term for “standby”. This refers to a person who has nothing to do, or who is jobless or lazy or someone who does not make use of his time in productive and sensible activities. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON LAGAY ▪ The act of giving bribes to fast-track or fix application to get what one wants at the earliest and fastest possible time. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON FOOD TABOOS ▪ It is the act of prohibiting the consumption of certain food or drinks. Some food may be prohibited during certain religious beliefs and period (Lenten season, Ramadan), at certain stages of life (pregnancy, sickness), or to certain classes of people (priests, infants) SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON MAÑANA HABIT ▪ It refers to procrastination, the disposition of shelving off responsibility to another day, the tendency to escape from duty and obligation as much as possible. It is manifested in expressions at “saka na”, “mamaya na” or “bukas na lang” SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON SAME-SEX PARTNERSHIP/RELATIONSHIP ▪ Is a relationship between persons of the same sex and can take many forms, from romantic and sexual, to non-romantic homosexually-close relationship. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON PADRINO SYSTEM ▪ Patronage in the Filipino culture and politics in the value system where one gains favor, promotion, or political appointment through family affiliation or friendships, as opposed to one’s merit. SOCIAL REALITIES: BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON SITUATION: As a businessman, Mang Leo is used to giving “padulas” (or lagay) to his main suppliers in order to expedite his business transactions with them. Behavior and Phenomena: LAGAY SOCIAL REALITIES: BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON ▪ Situation 1 is a behavioral example. Istambay is a usual scene in the streets of Manila and elsewhere in the urban areas in the country. It is behavioral feature of most young people who feel that the company of other young people is more meaningful and exciting than staying at home or reading books. SOCIAL REALITIES: BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON ▪ Situations 2 (Lagay) and 5 (Padrino System) are of the same category: they are about a set of practices. Situation 2 is about bribing, while situation 5 is about the use of an influential mediator. In both cases, undue influences either money or connections is being exerted to achieve certain ends or pursue a specific agenda. SOCIAL REALITIES: BEHAVIOR AND PHENOMENON ▪ Situations 3 (food taboos) is related to a group-based practice made possible and stronger by a set of beliefs revolving around the nexus of health and religion. Lastly, Situation 4 (same-sex partnership) is about a form of lifestyle associated with a sexual preference and romantic arrangement. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL CHANGE SELFIENG ▪ A photo that you take of yourself usually for use in social media. Selfie refers to a version of self-portraiture which predominantly takes the form of a photograph taken by oneself on a smartphone or webcam. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL CHANGE POLITICAL DYNASTY ▪ A succession of rulers from the same family or line that maintains power for several generations. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL CHANGE TRANSNATIONAL FAMILIES ▪ Are families who live apart but who create and retain a sense of collective welfare and unity, in short family hood, even across national borders. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL CHANGE YOUTH VOLUNTEERISM ▪ As the rule of donating time and energy for the welfare of people in the community as serious responsibility rather than for any material or financial reward. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL CHANGE VIDEO GAMING ▪ A game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or other display screen. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL CHANGE ▪ The scenarios presented are either new, emerging, and familiar. Scenario 1 on selfies is a recent behavioral pattern due to the infiltration of technology. Scenario 2 on political dynasty is a familiar one and reflects the durability of certain cultural and political practices. SOCIAL DYNAMICS: SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL CHANGE ▪ Scenario 3 represents an emerging pattern of family relations. Just like Scenario 1, scenario 5 which is about video gaming is fast becoming a normal behavioral pattern among the younger members of the Filipino society. Lastly, Scenario 4 is about volunteerism which appears to be a personal expression of a political principle by an increasing number of people.
