Midterm Study Guide Social Studies Grade 6 Section 1 Mountains Mountains, hills and maps ( pages 20 - 21 in the book ) Google classroom stream Mountains, hills and maps , How are mountains formed Google classroom stream, The Himalayas pg.26, The Andes mountains pg 28 Mountain is a mountain when the ground from it rises more than 300 metres or above. Hill is a hill when the ground from it rises less than 300 metres. Map is a drawing of a terrain designed to help us find our orientation and place and the two different types are relief and topographic maps. A topographic map are colorful maps that resemble man-made structures and natural features of the land such as : mountains,lakes,rivers roads and towns. Relief maps show the elevations and how high the different parts of a region,country or continent are. What is a stand alone mountain and write an example of stand alone mountain A stand alone mountain is a single mountain that stands alone and an example is mount fuji. Explain what mountain ranges are and write an example of mountain range Mountain ranges are a series of mountains aligned together or in other words a chain of mountains in a line and are connected by high ground an example is the himalayas. Volcanic mountains are formed as a result of volcanic activities on the surface of the Earth. Where are The Himalayas located. India,Pakistan,Afghanistan,china,Bhutan and Nepal What are some of the features of The Andes mountains Lake titicaca and Atacama desert Section 2 Rivers ( Down to the coast pgs 8-9 ) Explain these terms: Meander is rivers that widen on the river banks causing a S - shaped bend. Source is the starting point of a river and most of them are formed by snow mountain. Floodplain is when the land is covered with deposited mud from floods, when flooding is repeated it forms a large area called floodplain. Estuary is the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream. Mouth is a river mouth is where river flows into a larger body of water such as another river, a lake or ocean. Tributary is a river stream that flows into a larger river or lake.
