Public Service Announcement (PSA) What is a PSA? is a short informational clip that is spread in the interest of the public Objectives… to raise awareness and change public attitudes, opinions, or even behavior towards an important issue Messages… can be instructional, inspirational, or even shocking to elicit emotion and action PSAs… ▪ may include interviews, dramatizations, animations and many other types of video and audio content. ▪ It can be seen on television, heard over radio, viewed in outdoor and online media, direct mail, and read in print media. In other countries… At one point in time, broadcast stations were “…required by the Federal Communication Commission to allocate a certain amount of time to public service.” to “serve the community” (lrby, 2012) This meant that they had to “give away” a certain amount of air time to non-profit groups or make other announcements that are deemed to “serve the community” (lrby, 2012) PSA is created to educate the people; created by non-profit groups to serve the community or to raise awareness on important issues efficiently and effectively; PSA shows the advantages/disadvantages, pros/cons, benefits/lots, etc. How effective is PSA? ▪ It gets the audience to pay attention. ▪ The message is clear and easy to understand ▪ The message is supported by facts about the issue. ▪ The audience is able to sympathize with those affected by the issue. General components to include in PSA ▪ Video footage ▪ Music ▪ Voice over/ Narration ▪ Images/Photos ▪ Text Steps on how to write a PSA 1. Choose an Issue social or environmental issues (bullying, littering, or industrial pollution) 2. Hook your Audience use eyecatching images, dialogue bubbles, textables and don’t leave white empty space 3. Get your Facts Straight present factual information such as statistics is correct and relevant appropriate scenes, characters, and items that enhance the message 4. Be Straightforward message should be clear and concise
