NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION Philippine Culture & Tourism Geography INTRODUCTION The National Capital Region (NCR), also known as Metro Manila, is the political, economic, and cultural heart of the Philippines. Covering a land of approximately 638.6 square kilometers, it comprises 16 cities and one municipality, with a population exceeding 13 million people. OBJECTIVES Geography: Students will be able to identify the cities that make up the National Capital Region (NCR) on a map. Culture: Students will be able to describe at least three cultural festivals celebrated in the NCR and their significance. History: Students will be able to explain the historical importance of Metro Manila in the context of Philippine history. MAP OF THE REGION The National Capital Region (NCR) is subdivided into 17 local government units (LGUs) comprising 16 cities and one (1) municipality: Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Taguig, Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa; Pateros is the lone municipality in the region. REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS Famous Landmarks and Festivals INTRAMUROS FAMOUS LANDMARK Intramuros, latin for “inside the walls”, is an urban district and historic walled city within Metro Manila, Philippines. Constructed by the Spanish Imperial Government in the late 16th century. The walls aimed to protect the area from invasions and also served as the seat of government during Spanish colonization. SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH FAMOUS LANDMARK The one currently standing is the church’s third structure. Founded in 1571, San Agustin Church is originally made of bamboo and nipa but got destroyed by a fire in 1574 when the forces of Chinese pirate Limahong invaded Manila. It was rebuilt made of wood, but again, it was destroyed by a fire during the Spanish era. Recognized as the oldest stone church in the Philippines. San Agustin Church was named a National Historical Landmark and designated as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. RIZAL PARK FAMOUS LANDMARK Rizal Park is one of the most significant landmarks in the Philippines and also known as Luneta Park and originally referred to as Bagumbayan during the Spanish era, Rizal Park is where the country’s national hero Jose Rizal got executed in 1896. It is where his remains are enshrined and is recognized as the Philippines’ main kilometer zero. CHINATOWN, BINONDO FAMOUS LANDMARK Binondo, Manila’s China Town, is the oldest of its kind in the world. More than 400 years since it was established, the district still continues to thrive. Binondo was established in 1594, as a permanent settlement for Chinese- Catholic immigrants. QUEZON MEMORIAL CIRCLE, QUEZON CITY FAMOUS LANDMARK Is a national park in Quezon City and is a prominent landmark located within a large elliptical traffic circle bounded by the Elliptical Road FEAST OF THE BLACK NAZARENE FESTIVAL It is celebrated every January 9 at the heart of Manila--Quiapo. Thousands of devotees from all over Metropolis participate to this annual event in honor of the hundred-year-old statue of the Black Nazarene. METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL (MMFF) FESTIVAL It is an annual film festival celebrated every year in December and is organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority and was held nationwide in the Philippines. The festival focuses on Filipino produced films which run from Christmas Day through New Year's Day and into first weekend of January in the following year. FEAST OF SAN DIEGO DE ALCALA FESTIVAL The residents of barangays Polo and Poblacion in Valenzuela celebrates the feast day of San Diego de Alcala every November 12. This is the feast of the oldest church in Valenzuela, annually including events such as boat racing, street dancing, and other fabulous activities of the festival. THE CARACOL FESTIVAL FESTIVAL The Caracol Festival is an annual street festival held in Makati City in the Philippines, which also addresses environmental awareness and highlights cultural heritage. It takes place every last Sunday of February in the Circuit Makati, a former race track that is now a park. WATTAH WATTAH FESTIVAL FESTIVAL It is also known as the Basaan Festival (literally 'dousing of water'), is the feast of John the Baptist, patron saint of San Juan, Metro Manila and many other communities across the Philippines. It is held every June 24. KEY TOURIST DESTINATIONS Must-Visit Destinations FORT SANTIAGO MUST-VISIT DESTINATION A very interesting historical sightseeing destination in Manila, Fort Santiago, has various sights inside, from museums to an open-air park area. SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH MUST-VISIT DESTINATION It is famous for and serves as an example of the Gothic Revival architecture in the Philippines, while it is also the only steel building church in the Philippines. It was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 1973 and as a National Cultural Treasure in 2011. BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY (BGC) MUST-VISIT DESTINATION A trendy area filled with modern architecture, public art, upscale shopping, diverse dining, and dynamic nightlife. CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES (CCP) MUST-VISIT DESTINATION CCP is a leading cultural hub where Filipino arts are depicted in world- class performances and exhibitions at their iconic location fronting the Manila Bay area. NATIONAL MUSEUM MUST-VISIT DESTINATION Rich collections from Philippine history, art, and natural heritage are preserved in the National Museum with iconic masterpieces like the Spoliarium by Juan Luna, together with cultural exhibits that show off tourist attractions. Infrastructure Development: NCR boasts advanced infrastructure, including transportation networks (LRT/MRT, expressways) and commercial hubs like Makati and Bonifacio Global City. 3. Cultural and Educational Institutions: It is home to prestigious universities (e.g., University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila) and cultural landmarks (e.g., Intramuros, National Museum).
