# Taxonomy * Taxonomy is a science that deals with naming, describing and classification of all living organisms including plants. * Classification is based on behavioral, genetic, and biochemical variations. * Characterization, identification, and classification are the processes of taxonomy * Organisms are classified into similar categories namely kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. ## Carolus Linnaeus * Carolus Linnaeus is considered as the Father of Taxonomy. * He developed a procedure to name and organize species. Even today this procedure is being followed. * Linnaeus classified the universe into kingdoms, divided kingdoms into classes, classes into orders and orders further into genus, and finally divided into species. ### Taxonomic Hierarchy The image shows a pyramid with the following categories from the base to the top: * Kingdom * Phylum * Class * Order * Family * Genus * Species ## The Binomial System * According to Linnaeus, a Species is specified by a combination of its specific and generic names. * The genus and species names are always either italicized or underlined. * The genus name is capitalized and the species name is given in lowercase. * The scientific binomial for a wise man is represented either *Homo sapiens* or _Homo sapiens_.
