THE ART DURING THE SPANISH COLONIAL ERA Pre-colonial musical forms and indigenous instruments became limited to places that were not accessed by the friars and the colonial authorities. The introduction of the public education system is considered one of the highlights of this era. Because of the establishment of p u b l i c s c h o o l s , t h e d e m a n d f o r b o o k p u b l i c a t i o n i n c r e a s e d. A d v e r t i s i n g a n d graphic design were also introduced and became part of the curriculum to c a t e r t o t h e d e m a n d s o f t h e n e w i n d u s t r i e s a n d e c o n om y. U n l i k e t h e S p a n i a r d s , t h e A m e r i c a n s z e a l o u s l y t a u g h t t h e i r l a n g u a ge, m a k i n g E n g l i s h the lingua franca of the period. A t t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h e 2 0 t h c e n t u r y, a n e w u r b a n w a y o f l i f e w a s a l s o i n t r o d u ce d , which responded to the secular goals of education as well as health and g o v e r n a n c e. D a n i e l B u r n h a m , a n a r c h i t e c t a n d u r b a n p l a n n e r, w a s c o m m i s s i o n e d b y t h e A m e r i c a n g o v e r n m e n t t o r e d e si g n M a n i l a a n d B a g u io. He was with Architect William Parsons who modified, implemented, and brought the plans to completion. Inspired by the City Beautiful Movement introduced in 1893 at the Chicago World Fair, the new urban design employed Neoclassical architecture for its government buildings. Parks and lawns were integrated with these buildings to create an impressive and more inviting ambiance amid urban blight. There were also Filipino artists who studied abroad. Among them were Juan Arellano, Diosdado Lorenzo, and Victorio Edades. Upon coming back to the country, they brought with them new artistic concepts: the “modern art.” Hailed as the Father of Philippine Modern Art, Victorio Edades introduced modern visual art through his exhibition, which shocked many Filipino audiences due to his different style of painting. Instead of using the usual bright and happy colors, he used dull and dark hues. He also used unusual subjects in his works, such as the life of the laborers, workers, and the lower classes o f s o c i e t y. A l o n g w i t h E d a d e s , C a r l o s “ B o t o n g ” Francisco and Galo Ocampo were also instrumental to t h e m o d e r n a r t m o v e m e n t i n t h e c o u n t r y, m a k i n g t h e m t h e Tri u m v i ra t e o f P h i l i p p i n e M o d e r n A r t. F o l l o w i n g their footsteps, 13 artists called the Thirteen Moderns began creating works with the same aesthetic s e n s i b i l i t i e s. A m o n g t h e m w e r e Vi c e n t e M a n a n s a l a , Cesar Legaspi, and Hernando Ocampo.
