THE SUBJECT OF ART Realism - The subject is done the way it looks. Distortion - Deliberate alteration or exaggeration of the natural appearance… Abstraction - Breaks apart a subject and rearranges it in a different manner. Non-Objectivism - No subject at all-just an interplay of pure elements of art. THE ELEMENTS OF ART Space – Defined as void: Positive Space (a space enclosed in a space), Negative Space (denotes the opposite) Line – The extension of a point: Vertical, Horizontal, or Diagonal: Jagged, Curved, Series of dots, or broken lines. Shape and Form – Formed when ends of a line meet. It can either be geometric (angular) or organic (curvy). Color – Sensation created by visible wavelengths of light caught in a prism that creates a mood or tone. Value – The degree of lightness or darkness of a color. (pitch in music) Texture – Is the surface of an artwork which can be actual or tactile… PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Harmony – Wholeness of the design. Variety – Assortment or diversity of a work of art. Rhythm – Regular, repeated pattern in the elements of art. Proportion – Relationship of the elements of art with one another. Balance - Distribution of weight: Formal balance or identical sides, Informal balance or asymmetrical. Movement – Fundamental principle in choreography and the theater to convey feelings. Emphasis and Subordination – Gives importance or dominance to a unit or area, Subordination is the opposite. Form – The surface or an artwork. “What you see is what you get.” Content – The subject matter that carries the message of the work. Context – Varied situations in which works have been produced or interpreted. Primary Context – Personal type for it concerns sentiments of the artist. Secondary Context – The place and period in which the artist made their work. CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE PHILIPPINES In the late 1980’s, post modernism appeared here in our country. “Borrow, combine, explore” Pastiche – Blurring of divisions between fine art and commercial art. Bricolage – Creation that uses a diverse range of materials. Also known as assemblage. Installation – Made indoors or outdoors where a space is transferred into 3D artwork. Appropriation – Finds inspiration in artworks from the previous periods. Also known as borrowing. CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS IN THE REGION Choreography – Arrangement or design for dance movements. Composed of series of dance steps. Musical Instruments – tool or device that produces a sound. Literary and Musical Compositions – Literary works are written works. Musical compositions are notated (represented by musical symbols). Visual Design – Layout of lines, shapes, and color to form pattern on any piece. Theatrical Performance – The staging and execution of a production like drama, opera, and festivals. Cinema – The most popular yet the youngest of the art forms which appeared in the early 1900’s. Not live. Bulul – A carved wooden idol representing ancestors, which are highly revered in Ifugao culture. Animism – The usual theme of traditional arts with an intention to depict people’s gods and goddesses. UNIQUE TRADITIONAL ARTS Basketry of the Mangyans – The Mangyans are a group of indigenous people from Mindoro Island. T’nalak – Tapestry woven by the T’bolis in South Cotabato. Pis Siyabit – Woven head-cloth made from cotton or silk characterized with intricate geometric patterns. Embroidered Pina Jusi Cloth of Lumban, Laguna – A natural fiber derived from the leaves of the Native Philippines Red Pineapple. A luxury fabric softer than hemp and glossy like silk. Woodcarvings, Paper Mache, Toothpick Objects – Made in pakil from Paete, Laguna. A younger form of traditional art. Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Established in 1969 through executive order No. 303. “To preserve, develop, and promote arts and culture in the Philippines.” It has 69 regional art centers: Luzon (26), Visayas (19), Mindanao (24). Ugnayan sa Sining in 2010 - Kaisa sa Sining in 2014. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Formed In 1992, under Republic Act No. 7356. Subcommission on the Arts: Architecture and Allied Arts, Cinema, Dance, Dramatic Arts… Subcommission on Cultural Heritage: Art Galleries, Historical Research, Museums… Subcommission on Culture Dissemination: Committees on Communication, Cultural Education… Subcommission on Culture Communities and Traditional Arts: Northern Cultural Communities, Central Cultural Communities… February – Known as the National Arts Month (NAM) Tanghal Theater Festival – Sponsored in 2013, featuring regional theater organizations and university drama groups with the theme “Ani ng Sining”. THE FILIPINA ARTIST Women artist have become visible because of the initial steps of three women graphic artists in the 1970’s and 1980’s: Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Brenda V. Fajardo, and Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi. Brenda Fajardo – A doctor in the Philippines Studies and Professor Emerita in the University of the Philippines. A multi-awarded artist, educator, and cultural worker. Imelda Cajipe-Endaya – A mixed-media artist, curator, writer, and organizer. She is one of the first to use non- traditional materials for her artworks. The Order of National Artists – Established by virtue of the Presidential Proclamation No. 1001’s 1972. Butanding Festival Bicol April 28 – 30 Also gives thanks for the blessings given to the people of Donsol, Sorsogon. Kadayawan Annual Festival Every third week of August. Thanksgiving for the gifts of Nature and a celebration of life. Panagbenga Festival Baguio City The festival of flowers started to revive the city’s industry after the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake. Pattaraday Festival Santiago City, Cagayan During the first week of May. Commemorates the founding anniversary of the city and the coming together of several ethnic groups. The Ybanag word pattaraday means unity. Maskara Festival Bacolod City Every third week of October. Pays tribute to the sugar industry that once flourished in the region. F’lomlok Festival Polomolok, South Cotabato Showcases the local products of the region. “Hunting grounds” Bangus Festival Dagupan City, Pangasinan April – first week of May Fluvial Parades Boats are held to honor patron saints. TECHNIQUES Writing Technique – Way a writer arranges words and thoughts to create moods or atmospheres, or to evoke the feeling he or she wants to express. Musical Technique – Way the musician handles his or her instrument… Artist’s Technique – His or her approach in using the medium to come out with the desired result. Acting Technique – The manner of using facial expressions, gestures, and body movements to portray a character. Dance Technique – The way of moving one’s body to express an emotion… CHOREOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES Planned – The choreography prescribes the movements and form in detail, giving little or no opportunity for the dancers to be creative. Improvisation – Allows the dancers freedom to interpret the general instructions. “Interpretative Dancing” TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES Mirroring – Dancers face each other while doing the same steps. Retrograde – Reverse performance of a sequence of dance steps. Canon – Dancers performing similar steps in a successive manner. Levels – Varying positions of dancers. Shadowing – Dancer is standing behind another while doing the same steps. Unison – Unanimous performance of steps. Contemporary Arts – Created from 1970’s up to the present day. Art reflects the values of our society. 3 MAJOR FORMS OF ART Visual Arts – Is an art form that is perceived by the eyes. They are also called Spatial Arts because this artwork occupies space. Graphic Art – They have length and width. They are also 2D arts which are placed on flat surfaces. Drawing, Painting, Sketching, Photography… Plastic Art – They have length, width and volume. They are called 3D arts. Sculpture, Architecture, Interior Design, Set Design… Performing Arts – Perceived both by the ears (for audio) and eyes (for visuals). Music – Appeals to the sense of hearing, composed by combining notes into harmony. Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, or a combination of two. Acapella – Is singing without musical instruments. Original Pilipino Music (OPM) – contemporary music of the Philippines. Dance – Uses the art of human form wherein the body is used, mobilized, and choreographed in specific time, form, and space. Traditional – Filipino Folk Dances and Ethnic Dance Social – Can be performed in pairs or in groups to socialized. “Ballroom dances” Theatrical Theater – The dramatic text is portrayed by actors and actresses, using their voice and body to convey artistic expression. Film Literary Arts – Presented in written mode. Prose – Written in paragraph form Short stories, Novels, Essays… Poetry – Composed of lines and stanzas. Integrative Art – Classification of arts that can be combined to form an artwork.
