TISSUE THE ISSUE WITH TISSUE Objective: To identify the four types of tissue in the human body Bell Work: 1. What is a tissue? A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved There are FOUR types of tissue found within the human body: EPITHELIAL CONNECTIVE NERVOUS MUSCLE As we go over each type of tissue, fill in your graphic organizer with the corresponding notes and color your Tissue Scienstructables accordingly. © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved EPITHELIAL TISSUE: FUNCTION: Protects body, absorbs nutrients, filters blood & secretes hormones. There are two main types: Covering/lining: found on internal organs and outside of body, including the skin, digestive tract, and lymph vessels Glandular: secretes hormones and other fluids such as saliva, stomach acid, and sweat and include glands like the thyroid, pancreas, salivary, sweat, and mammary glands © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved CONNECTIVE TISSUE: FUNCTION: Provide structure and support, cushions organs, stores nutrients. There are three main types: Loose: scattered arrangement of cells in an extracellular matrix, such as fat cells (adipose tissue), which attaches skin to muscle and insulates the body Fibrous: densely packed cells arranged in bundles, such as tendons and ligaments Cartilage, bone, & blood are also connective tissues with unique properties that do not put them in the other types © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved NERVOUS TISSUE: FUNCTION: Carries impulses from the brain to the spinal cord and throughout the body. Composed of two types of cells: Neuron: basic unit of nervous system composed of a cell body, dendrite and axon Glial cells: insulate and anchor neurons to blood vessels to provide nutrients to the cells © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved MUSCLE TISSUE: FUNCTION: Made of muscle fibers that relax and contract. There are three types: Skeletal: moves body such as the biceps and triceps (arm) or the orbicularis oculi (eye) Smooth: controls involuntary muscle contractions that you don’t think about, like your intestines, blood vessels and bladder Cardiac: pumps blood to all of the body cells and only found in the heart © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved End of Class Work : When in healthcare would we have to break through the layers of our tissues? Whatare some examples of jobs that have direct contact with these tissues? Homework: follow along with the instructions, and return the Scienstructable on Wednesday (put your name on the back) Now that you’ve learned about the four main types of tissue, color and cut out your Tissue Scienstructables and glue them by their tabs to the center body on your paper. You should be able to lift each one when finished so you can review the different types of tissues. © Getting Nerdy® , 2012 to present All rights reserved
