LESSON OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Define the term scale; 2. State three ways in which scales may be shown on a map; 3. Explain why map scales are important. What do you know about a map’s scale? WHAT IS A SCALE? Map scale is the ratio of distance in the map with the distance on actual ground represented by the map. IMPORTANCE OF A MAP SCALE The scale on a map is a tool that can be used to indicate the amount by which an area has been reduced. The scale on a map is used to determine the distance between two or more places and the actual size of an area. The scale on a map indicates the relationship between distances on the map and distances on the ground. DO YOU KNOW THE TYPES OF SCALES? WATCH THE VIDEO AND NAME THE TYPES OF SCALES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_YH1AAiKH0&t=3 s TYPES OF SCALES Ratio Scale: this method uses numbers to compare distances on a map with distances on the ground. E.G. 1:40 000 This means every 1 cm on the map represents 40 thousand cm on the ground View the Map of Barbados (Page 59) and the Map of Jamaica (Pages 38-39) in your atlas. What do you notice about the relationship between the size of the ratio scale and the size of the map. GOOGLE EARTH ACTIVITY https://www.google.com/earth/ TYPES OF SCALES Word Scale: is a scale is expressed in words. E.G. one cm on the map represents one km on the actual ground. Linear Scale: is a line with a scale on it. It is an easy way to compare distance on the map with that of the ground. IDENTIFYING MAP SCALES Can you indicate the type of scale that is represented below: 1) One centimeter represents five kilometers 2) 1: 400000 3)
