STRAIGHT-LINE DISTANCE LESSON OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Identify the steps involved in finding the straight-line distance between two points. 2. Calculate the distance between two points. IDENTIFYING MAP SCALES Can you indicate the type of scale that is represented below: 1) One metre represents five kilometres 2) 1: 400000 3) PARTS OF A LINEAR SCALE STEPS Identify both locations on the map ( POINT A and POINT B) What is the straight-line distance in kilometres for Montego Bay from Spanish Town? ❑ Use a ruler to draw a straight line connecting both points (locations) on the map. ❑ Place a strip of paper along the line drawn and mark off both locations. ❑ Place the strip of paper with the markings along the linear scale starting at zero. Mark off every full kilometre. ❑ Measure the remainder that does not measure a full km on the metre scale. ❑ NB.You cannot give your answer final answer in two different units. ❑ Convert the metres to km by doing the following: 400/1000= 0.4 ❑ Add the total number of fully measured km ( 3km) to the converted figure (0.4) ❑ ANSWER =3.4KM ALTERNATIVE METHOD FOR CALCULATING THE REMAINDER. Each line on the metre (m) scale represents 100m 100 metre is equivalent to.1 km Therefore to calculate the remainder you can simply count as.1 km,.2 km,.3km,.4km ONLY WATCH 1:45-2:17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq5LxCpwagc QUICK PRACTICE Using pages 38-39 of your atlas, find the straight-line distance between the following places. Spanish Town and Annotto Bay Black River and Mandeville Linstead and Highgate Falmouth and Montego-Bay Morant Bay and Port Antonio
