# Lab 7: Animal Diversity **Animals have tissues (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm): germ layers** * **Cephalization:** N.S. in front of the body * **Dimorphic:** male & female differ visually * **Frontal plane:** Separates into dorsal & ventral * **Transverse plane:** Separates into cranial & caudal * **Sagittal plane:** Separates into left & right, medial → lateral ← **Zygote undergoes cleavage** * forms blastula → blastocoel (cavity) * undergoes gastrulation → forms a blastopore with internal cavity (archenteron) * This then creates 2/3 **Diploblastic** - contain 2 tissues (ectoderm & endoderm) * Hydra/jellyfish **Triploblastic** - contain 3 tissues (ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm) - more complex * worms, arthropods, & vertebrates * Have a coelom (fluid-filled cavity lined with mesoderm) **Symmetry** * **Radial Symmetry:** Can be split into identical pieces (planaria, jellyfish) * **Bilateral Symmetry:** Can be split into left & right sides that mirror each other (starfish, crayfish) **Protostomes** - blastopore becomes the mouth. Mesoderm develops into the anus. (Chordates, humans) **Deuterostomes** - blastopore becomes the anus. Mesoderm develops into the mouth **Sponges:** no true tissues, have specialized cells to carry out functions, Asymmetrical **Extra Information** * Plants make up most of the biomass **Proximal:** toward the trunk **Distal:** away from the trunk **Diagram:** (A diagram of a human-like figure with arrows indicating proximal and distal locations is present. There is also a diagram of a fish-like organism with labels for different body parts) **Other notes:** There are various drawings of animals and diagrams illustrating different animal features.
