Inocencio, Alexandra Kieshi S. BSTM 1106 Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuwela Introduction First of all, "Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuwela" was full of admiration for the rich presentation of Filipino culture and history. How the play intertwined humor into serious themes struck me strongly to the point where the characters and their struggles felt so real. Character My favorite character was Juan Luna himself, for he was full of passion and determination. His artistic spirit and struggles reminded me so much of myself. I also liked the supporting characters, mainly his love interest, because they symbolized strength and resilience, a showcase of how deep the story was. Themes Of the many central themes, some included nationalism, the importance of art, and the complication known as love. The play did very well with actually showing how, on occasion, art can be a strong tool for voicing one's identity and a means to fight against social change. Learnings I was educated on the historical background of the Philippines during Juan Luna. This also furthered my learning of nationalism and the artists' roles in society. The play made me contemplate how art can inspire change and challenge societal norms. *Conclusion* All in all, it brought me closer to the soul of "Juan Luna: Isang Sarsuwela". For itself, it was a mix of history, emotion, and values that moved it from being an entertainment to an enriching perspective about the power of art in shaping identity and social consciousness.
