# Nebular Hypothesis - The solar system evolved from a nebula that disintegrated due to the fall of its own gravity about 4.5 billion years ago - Vast cloud contains light elements with trace amounts of heavier elements - Cloud contraction occurred due to gravity, forming denser atoms through clumping of atoms - Matter began to move in a giant circular manner, as the cloud continued to spin and contract, it flattened and became a disk with a lump in the middle - 50 million years until the center contained high energy causing nuclear reactions - A few thousand years later, the Sun and the rest of the disk began to cool down, the disk edge emerged much cooler than the center of the disk due to the great distance from the sun - Because of the various temperatures of the disk causing materials to become solid, dust-like particles, rocky dust particles, icy particles containing water and frozen gases (It took about 500 million years for the planet to form) ## Definition of Terms (Space objects) | Object | Definition | |---|---| | Asteroid | Chunk of rock that orbits the sun. | | Comet | A cosmic snowball of rocks, dusts, frozen gases that grows tails as it comes nearer to the sun causing dust and gasses to spit from it leaving trails behind. Visible in the night sky. | | Meteor | Or "shooting star" falls into the planets atmosphere leaves a bright tail in the sky (small chunk of debris and rocks in space). | | Meteorites | Rocks and dust that hits the ground (small chunk of debris and rocks in space).| | Planet | Large heavenly body that revolves around the Sun in the solar system.| | Moon | Also called as the satellite. It is basically a solid body. Few have atmosphere. It’s formed from discs of gas revolving around the planets | ## Ninth planet - Called planet nine - Similar to planet Uranus and Neptune, known as gaseous planet - Confirmation of the real ninth planet is found tracing highly elongated orbit in the outer portion of the solar system - Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown (researchers of planet nine)
