REGION 1, 2, 3 and NCR 21st Century Literature fromPresented the Philippines by GROUP 1 and the World REGION I: Ilocos Region The Ilocos Region or Region I of the Philippines is located in the northwestern region portion of Luzon. It is bounded by the Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley to the east, Central Luzon to the south and by the South China Sea to the west. The region is composed of four provinces, namely: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. Its regional center is San Fernando City, La Union. The Ilocano speaking people compose 66% of the region, the Pangasinan speaking people compose 27%, and the Tagalogs compose 3%. Region II: Cagayan Valley Cagayan Valley, also known as Region II, is located in the northeastern part of Luzon, Philippines. It consists of five provinces: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino, with four chartered cities: Cauayan, Ilagan, Santiago, and Tuguegarao, the regional center and largest city. Ibanag, Itawis and Ilocano and Malueg are the major dialects of the Region. Region III: Central Luzon 7 Provinces: Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales. Economic Importance: One of the largest regions in the Philippines by population and economic output. There Dialect are Tagalog is predominantly spoken by the Novo Ecijanos, comprising 67.7%, followed by the Ilocano dialect at 29.93%. Other dialects are Pampango, Pangasinan, Bicol, and Ilonggo. NCR The National Capital Region (NCR), also known as Metropolitan Manila, is the Philippines' political, economic, and educational hub. It is the smallest and most densely populated region, home to over 13 million people. NCR has no provinces and is divided into 17 local government units: 16 cities and 1 municipality (Pateros). The cities include Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Taguig, Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, and Muntinlupa. The predominant language used and spoken is Tagalog; the rest speaks Cebuano, Ilonggo, Bicolano, Waray, Pampangueño and other dialects. REGION 2 Amador T. Daguio (1912–1966) was a renowned Filipino writer and poet. He authored several works, including Amador T. Wedding Dance, The Flaming Lyre, Man Daguio of Earth, and Hudhud Hi Aliguyon. He received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award for his contributions to Philippine literature. Daguio earned degrees in Philosophy, English, and Law, studying at the University of the Philippines, Stanford University, and Romualdez Law College. Born: January 8, 1912 Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippine Islands Died: April 26, 1966 (aged 54) Philippine General Hospital, Manila REGION 3 Aurelio Tolentino (1867–1915) Aurelio Born: January 8, 1912 Tolentino Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippine Islands Died: July 5, 1915 Philippine General Hospital, Manila Education: Colegio de San Juan de Letran, University of Santo Tomas. Member of the Katipunan, worked with Andres Bonifacio. Known for political and cultural activism. Famous Work: Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas (Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow) A patriotic play criticizing American colonization. Banned by the American government, leading to Tolentino’s imprisonment. NCR Francisco Balagtas y de la Cruz (1788– 1862) Francisco Born: April 2, 1788 Balagtas y de Died: February 20, 1862 (aged 73), Udyong, Bataan, Spanish Philippines la Cruz Nickname: Kiko Citizenship: Spanish (granted by the 1812 Spanish Constitution) Alma Mater: Colegio de San Juan de Letran Notable Work: Florante at Laura Spouse: Juana Tiambeng (married 1842) Children: 11 Widely regarded as one of the greatest Filipino literary figures, Francisco Balagtas made a significant impact on Filipino literature with his defining work, Florante REPRESENTA TIVE WORKS REGION 1 Biag ni Lam-ang, Pedro Bukaneg is credited as the author of Biag ni Lam- ang, an epic poem that is one of the most important works in pre-colonial Filipino literature. It tells the adventures of Lam-ang, a hero with extraordinary strength and abilities. Bukaneg is also regarded as the "Father of Ilocano Literature." REGION 2 "The Wedding Dance" is a short story by Amador Daguio that explores themes of love, tradition, and cultural conflict. It tells the story of a couple torn apart by societal expectations, making it emotionally powerful and symbolically rich. REGION 3 Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas Allegory of the Filipino struggle for independence. Written on 1903, during American colonial rule. Key Characters: Inang Bayan – Represents the Philippines. Haring Bata – Symbolizes hope for the future. Bagong Sibol – Embodies the new generation’s aspirations. Dramatizes the shift from Spanish to American colonization, calling for Filipino unity and resistance against foreign rule. Controversial, led to Tolentino’s arrest for inciting rebellion. NCR Florante at Laura An 1838 awit written by Tagalog poet Francisco Balagtas. The story was dedicated to his former sweetheart María Asunción Rivera, whom he nicknamed "Mar" and Selya in Kay Selya for Celia. The story is loosely based on Balagtas' own biography.
