MODULE 1: THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE Presented by Ms. De Asis, Princess Jhaycarl C. OBJECTIVES At the end of this module, you are expected to:  Appreciate local literary heritage  Writing a feature article  Compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier genres/periods citing their elements, structures, and traditions WHAT IS LITERATURE It comes from the Latin word “litera” which means an acquaintance with letters. Literature can be defined as everything in print. It is a body of literary productions, either oral, written, or visual, containing imaginative language that realistically portrays thoughts, emotions, and experience of the human condition. Literature is a product of a culture that concretizes man’s array of values, emotions, actions, and idea. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE In 2014 conference in Cebu city, senator Allan Peter Cayetano remarked that the national government stop giving the bulk of its national budget to metro Manila Metro Manila is nota the Philippines, Philippines is not Metro manila. Providing equal resources to all regions of the country has been a continuous problem in more than a century of our independence as a nation. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE Nature cannot be blamed for this condition. The archipelagic nature of the Republic of the Philippines has made the country enjoy a rich biodiversity. Our topography, which consists of mountainous terrains, dense forests, plains, and coastal areas, allow us to enjoy endemic flora and fauna. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE TOPOGRAPHY “Topo” for Place and “graphia” for writing THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE ENDEMIC FLORA AND FAUNA Species that are native to specific regions and are not founded anywhere else in the world. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE Our country has a total of 182 living languages. With these languages our ancestors communicated, built their communities, and created unique cultural products Aside from a sympathetic understanding of the geographical divisions, we must as well note that the Philippines, heretofore called Las Islas Filipinas, had been under different political rulers. THE REGIONAL APPROACH TO READING PHILIPPINE LITERATURE With this given, we can immediately see the need for more scholars and chroniclers as well as quality translators to compile and translate the native tunes and lyrics indigenous to each or to more than one region. REGIONAL LITERATURE FOLKTALE MYTH FAIRYTALE POEM PANTUM 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE SPOKEN POETRY DIGI-FICTION ILLUSTRATED GRAPHICS NOVEL NOVELS SUMMARY Some 21st century literature of the Philippines can be found in blogs, online newspapers, online magazines, online journals, etc. Also a good number of performances of songs, skits, and amateur films showcasing regional works can be found in video-sharing sites like YouTube. While it is true that regional literature has been overlooked for so long, perhaps 21st century technology, particularly the internet can help build bridges across the archipelago for us to be able to indulge in regional literature.
