# Historical Perspective in Ultrasound - The use of ultrasound in medicine began shortly after the 2nd World War - Dr. Karl Theodore Dussik's work on transmission ultrasound investigation of the brain in 1942 (Austria) was the first published work on medical ultrasound. - Ultrasound was first developed for clinical purposes in 1956 in Glasgow. - Obstetrician Ian Donald and engineer Tom Brown developed the first prototype systems based on instrumentation used to detect industrial flaws in ships. - They perfected its clinical use, and by the end of the 1950s, ultrasound was routinely used in Glasgow hospitals. - Commercial systems became available in the mid 1960s.
