## 17.3 Notes: Plate Boundaries ### Characteristics * **Volcanic *mountains*** * Earthquakes * Extreme Heat ### Some divergent boundaries form continents. As continental crust begins to separate, the stretched crust forms a long, narrow depression called a *rift* boundary (i.e. Great Rift Valley, Africa). ### Transform Boundaries A region where 2 plates **slide** horizontally forming long faults (break in a land mass). ### Characteristics: * Long faults (break in a land mass) * Shallow Earthquakes (i.e. San Andreas Fault, California) ### Convergent Boundaries 2 tectonic plates are moving **towards** each other. In this type of boundary, the denser plate eventually pushes beneath the other, less-dense plate in a process called **subduction**. * **Oceanic** (more dense) * **Continental** (less dense)
