# Erik Erikson Stages of Psychosocial Development We develop our identity over the lifespan through a series of interrelated stages of development. Identity, to Erikson, is a commitment to an ideology, a belief system, values, etc. ## Stages of Psychosocial Development | Stage | Age | Description | |---|---|---| | **Trust vs Mistrust** | Infant | We develop a sense of reliability of people and objects in our world through our attachments | | **Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt** | Toddler | Toddlers need to know that they are powerful, but at the same time, adults need to set appropriate limits. Shame and doubt help us recognize the need for limits. | | **Initiative vs. Guilt** | Preschooler | Preschoolers need to learn how to regulate purpose. They need to courageously envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear of punishment. | | **Industry vs. Inferiority** | Grade-schooler | Children must learn about the productive skills their culture requires by getting praise from adults or peers for productive work. Otherwise, they might feel inadequate and try to retreat to the protective embrace of the family and do not venture farther away from home. | | **Identity vs. Role Confusion** | Teenager | Individuals need to learn about their unique identity with a coherent sense of self and valued role in society. | | **Intimacy vs. Isolation** | Young Adult | The ability to fuse their identity with another while maintaining their individuality. | | **Generativity vs. Stagnation** | Middle-age Adult | Finding meaning through contributing to society and leaving a legacy for future generations. | | **Integrity vs. Despair** | Older Adult | Achieving a sense of integrity of the self by accepting the lives they have lived, and thus accept death, or yield to despair that their lives cannot be relived. | **Increases in Complexity**
