## History of Ibaan ### Pastoral Council - Mrs. Noniluna Panganiban - Ms. Lucing Magtibay - Mrs. Petra Baes-Mataas - Ms. Esperanza Villanueva ### An Essay on Saint James (Santiago Apostol) **Spain's Patron Saint, Symbol of Castilian Courage, Hope, Faith and Devotion** **Written by Miguel M. Mercado and published in Philippine Herald, July 25, 1930** Mellowed by the centuries, the name Saint James (Santiago Apostol), patron saint of Spain, stands as its faith and devotion, in the heart of the dust of conflict hundreds of years ago in Spain that wrought great changes in the history of continental Europe. Saint James was the first apostle of the Lord Jesus to launch the principles and tenets of the Christian Church against the barbarian walls of magnificent Zaragoza, key city of old Spain, and made this country what it is today. The memory of old Spain intrigues the imagination. Think of guitars strummed caressingly under balconies on moonlit nights, raven-haired, dark-eyed Andalucian senoritas, castanets, imperturbable duennas and dashing caballeros when you read or hear something about this country. Then of course of Spain's history, part of which have passed into undying legends and traditions of that Champion of Spain for example, the Cid Rodrigo pias de Rivar, immortalized by Washington Irving in his *Alhambra* tales who in the Middle Ages saved Spain from the invading hordes of Moslems and more from Mohammedanism which these infidels propagated in every country they visited. But reviewing all these with a passing glance, as the thought of Spain invariably brings about these wonderful things which we have heard so much about, let us now dwell particularly on Saint James (Santiago Apostol), martyr saint of Spain in whose honor the Spanish nation dedicate this particular day once a year, a religious tradition that is held simultaneously in several places in the world where St. James is the patron saint, as well, including my hometown of Ibaan, Batangas. Santiago Apostol was the son of Zebedee and Salome, a poor couple who lived during the time of Christ. Together with his brother, John the Evangelist, Santiago used to go to the mountains and dream of things that he know would someday come true. That particular sultry afternoon when he and John lay in the cool of a shady palm tree, there passed a man followed by several people. The attitude of these people was one of respect and humility. The stranger looked at the two brothers smiled at them and asked softly, "would'st thou follow me?" And thus without any second thought, the two brothers became the first disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. They followed him wherever he went, were witnesses to the numerous miracles that he performed. According to old traditions, they were only ones present at the healing of the mother of St. Peter. The poor woman was so afflicted in the body with a certain disease which no doctors of the time could cure, that her son, Peter had given up all hope of becoming well again. Thus when the Lord came and cured his mother, Peter became another disciple and together with St. James and John, followed Jesus in his every wanderings. There was a merciless point in Saint James' character, however when the inhabitants of a certain place refused to heed the teachings of the Lord, he asked Jesus to let fire fall down from heaven and devour said people. The Lord just smiled at him and all the bitterness went out of his heart. His mother, in the meanwhile, hearing of the favor her sons were enjoying hastened to Jesus Christ while he was stopping at a village inn, in the course of his wanderings, and on her knees asked that when her two sons, James and John died, he would place them by his side, one on the left and the other on the right. Jesus smiled beamingly at her and said, addressing the two, "Art thou willing to drink from the chalice of pain with me?" The brothers answered meekly, "Yes, Lord, we are ready." And thus, when on that fateful day, amidst the rumble of thunder and the flash of lightning the Lord with a sigh gave up His ghost, James, sick at heart decided that it was to preach the things He had taught them. ### The Illustrious Ilustre Brothers of Ibaan **Don Mateo Ilustre y Saez (1861-1911)** - Born in Ibaan on September 21, 1861 - Second child of "Cabisang" Nicolas Ilustre and Narcisa Saez - Married Dna.
