Burden of Cardiovascul ar Disease … IN CANADA Objectives: Review the burden of Cardiovascular Disease in Canada Discuss mortality and morbidity rates Discuss the economic cost of CVD How collected? Information on the burden of CVD includes mortality rates and hospital data. Mortality rates- collected by provincial registries and send to Statistics Canada Hospitalizations (CVD morbidity)- reported based on discharge dx and procedures performed during hospital stay Burden of CVD in Canada Deaths attributable to CVD Hospitalizations attributable to CVD Economic burden of CVD Deaths Attributable to CVD: 2004 Deaths Attributable to CVD: 2018 Deaths Attributable to CVD: 2018 CVD is no longer the leading cause of death in Canada Mortality rates from CVD have dropped considerably Deaths Attributable to CVD: 2022 In 2022, ~197 out of 100,000 Canadians died from CVD (Statista 2024) Lower Death rates in Canada… Why? Cardiovascular disease and cancer are two of the most common causes of deaths in Canada Also, in other developed countries The decrease in mortality can be attributed to improvements in: Preventative program Social and environmental aspects (ie., access to PA, healthy foods) Medical care Improved treatment and diagnosis of HTN, dyslipidemia Initiative by Canadian Hypertension Education Program CHEP Primary and secondary prevention program Improvements in utilization of medication (BB, ACE, statins, anti-platelets following MI’s) Lower rates of smoking Lower Death rates in Canada… Why? Have to be cautious … Canada has an aging population poor dietary habits ↑physical inactivity ↑ obesity Hospitalizations Attributable to CVD CVD is the leading cause of hospitalizations for diseases in Canada (4.6%). Economic Burden of CVD is rising CVD is the most expensive disease in Canada In 1998, CVD cost $18.5 billion (or 12% of total cost of illness in Canada) $6.8 billion spent on direct costs Directs costs refer to health care expenditures directly relating to the treatment of illness and include hospital care expenses, drug expenses, physician expenditures $11.7 billion spent on in-direct costs with mortality and morbidity Indirect costs refer to those costs related to loss productivity due to short and long-term disability and premature mortality In 2004, CVD cost $21.2 billion References American College of Sports Medicine.
