21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World 2024 1st Quarter Reviewer Part I. Literature - The written work of a specific culture, sub-culture, religion, philosophy or the study of such written work which may appear in poetry or in prose. 21st Century Literature - The new literary work which deals with current themes/ issues and reflects a technological culture, created within the last decade written by contemporary authors who often breaks traditional writing rules. Universality - The lasting impression of literature to the lives of the people, who once in their lives read, watched, and witness the wonders brought about by these masterpieces. Roman Alphabet- The first Filipino alphabet called alibata was replaced by the Roman alphabet. Cenaculo - The term for the dramatic performance to commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Tanaga - The Filipino equivalent of a Japanese haiku. Zarzuela - Considered the "father" of the drama in the Philippines. Use of the Roman alphabet - Not influenced by the Spanish colonizers in the Philippines. Period of Self-Discovery and Growth - The literary period that saw the most amount of growth and development in Philippine literature in English. Alejandro Roces - The National Artist for Literature in the 21st century who was a short story writer and essayist known for his widely anthologized "My Brother's Peculiar Chicken". Part II. The first author of literature in the world, known by name, was the high- priestess of Ur, Enheduanna (2285-2250 BCE). Much of the early literature from Mesopotamia concerns the activities of the gods. Eternity as a characteristic of literature pertains to the appeal of the moral values of the literary masterpieces toward its audience. Universality as a literature characteristic pertains to the global applicability in which a work transcends across culture, gender, religion, age and time, and generation. Literature is a permanent expression in words of some thought or feelings or idea about life and the world. For the purposes of study, Literature is divided into the categories of fiction or non-fiction today. 21st Century Literature is the new literary work which deals with current themes/ issues and reflects a technological culture. Proclamation No. 968 was signed in 2015 to declare April as National Literature Month. Part III. The Bible is a collection of sacred texts that have been influential for over a thousand years. It covers a wide range of topics, from history and poetry to philosophy and theology. As one of the most widely read and studied books in the world, the Bible continues to shape the beliefs and values of millions of people globally. Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere is a classic novel that has had a profound impact on 21st-century Philippine literature. It is a powerful social commentary that exposes the corruption and injustice prevalent in colonial-era Philippines. The novel's themes of nationalism, social justice, and individual agency continue to resonate with contemporary readers. The 21st-century reader is characterized by their technological literacy and digital competence. This reader is adept at navigating the vast array of information available online and is skilled at using technology to access, analyze, and share knowledge. As the world becomes increasingly digitized, the 21st-century reader must continuously adapt to new technologies and platforms. Aphorisms and proverbs are concise, often metaphorical statements that express norms, values, and wisdom. These pithy expressions can be found in various cultural and literary traditions, and they serve to distill complex ideas into memorable and relatable forms. The Salubong is a religious tradition that celebrates the meeting of the Risen Christ and his mother, the Virgin Mary. This powerful symbolic reunion is a poignant representation of the themes of faith, redemption, and the enduring bonds of family and community. The Zarzuela is a musical comedy or melodrama that has been an important part of Philippine cultural heritage. These lively, often satirical performances have entertained audiences for generations and have played a significant role in shaping the country's performing arts. Francisco Sionil Jose's Rosales Saga is a celebrated series of novels that chronicles the history and social dynamics of the Philippines through the lens of a single family. This epic work of literature has been praised for its rich characterization, vivid storytelling, and insightful exploration of the nation's complex past. Virgilio S. Almario is a renowned Filipino poet known for his "Bagay" poetry, which focuses on the relationship between humans and the natural world. His work is celebrated for its lyrical beauty and its ability to capture the essence of the Filipino experience. Cirilo F.
