ARTS OF CHINA CHINESE ARTS ENCOMPASSES Performing Fine arts Folk arts arts Art Types CHINESE FOLK ART LITERATURE VISUAL ART FOLK ARTS 1. Chinese Paper Cutting – idea of expressing symbols and Chinese characters that are already a part of calligraphy was now extended to Han paper cut outs. 2. Chinese Paper folding – started in the Han dynasty but later transformed into origami after Buddhist monks took paper to Japan. VISUAL ARTS Chinese painting – is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or nature-colored pigments, oils are not used. MAIN TECHNIQUES IN CHINESE PAINTING Uses highly detailed brushstrokes that 1. Gong bi depict details very precisely. It is often (meticulous) highly colored and usually has figural or narrative subjects. 2. Shui mo Watercolor or brush painting. Chinese calligraphy and ink and wash painting are closely related since they are done using similar tools and techniques. STYLES 1. Lishu style (clerical script) – more regularized, and in some ways similar to modern text. 2. Kaishu style (traditional regular script) – still in use today and is even more regularized. CURSIVE STYLE 1.Xingshu (semi-cursive or running script) 2.Caoshu (cursive or grass script) CALLIGRAPHY RULES 1. The characters must be written correctly. 2. The characters must be legible. 3. The characters must be concise. 4. The characters must fit their context 5. The characters must be aesthetically pleasing.
