ELEMENTS OF Interior Design DESIGN Objective 2.02 Elements of Design ◼LINE ◼Form/Shape ◼Space ◼Texture ◼Pattern ◼Color Line Most basic element of design Horizontal Line ◼ Relaxation, calmness, and restfulness ◼ Associated with: ▪ sunsets (end of a day or time of rest) ▪ waves in the ocean (relaxing) ◼ What position do you sleep in? Question? Think of the different rooms in a house. Where do you see horizontal lines? Vertical lines ◼ Eyes move up and down ◼ Suggest height, strength, dignity, and stability Question: Where in a house do you see vertical lines? Diagonal lines ◼Different levels of energy: ▪ the degree of the angle ▪ total number of angles. ◼Think of a lightning bolt. Question? Where in a house do you see diagonal lines? Curved lines ◼Appear softer ◼Feelings of: ▪ organization ▪ eternity ▪ uniformity (circle) ▪ natural ❏ Communicates freedom and openness Shape & form Shape: the outline of something Shape Form: the PHYSICAL SHAPE of a three dimensional object Form More shape & form… Shape Circle is the shape. Form A sphere is the form. Form : contains volume & mass has height, width, and depth. More form… Guidelines for using form: 1. Form follows function 2. Related forms are more agreeable than unrelated forms. 3. A gradual change in form can smoothly direct the eyes. Form - 4 types Realistic Abstract Geometric Free form Form - 4 types cont. Realistic: The real thing; lifelike, traditional & familiar Abstract: rearranges or stylizes a recognizable object traits look real but altered gives contemporary, changing, creative & artistic feeling Form - 4 types Geometric: uses squares, rectangles, circles & other geometric figures to create form gives organization, order, planning & tailored feeling Free form: random & free flowing found in nature (plants, stones, wood) gives sense of freedom, untraditional, unfamiliar & different from realistic Space ◼Space is the area around the form (think area around a dining room table) ◼Space is given boundaries by the walls Question? Large and small spaces have different appeals and dislikes. Can you think of some and explain why there are advantages and disadvantages? Question? Imagine and name some way to give the illusion of more space? More space… 1. How is this space enhanced? 2. How are the areas within this space defined? Your space can have HIGH MASS or LOW MASS High Mass is Visually Low Mass is simple and Crowded sparse. Minimalistic Positive space vs Negative space ◼Positive Space ◼Negative Space Positive space vs Negative space Texture ◼how a surface feels or appears to feel ◼Two kinds of texture: tactile How a surface ACTUALLY feels to the touch visual texture The illusion of how something will feel COLOR We have already discussed the most important element of design in our previous objective. PATTERN Pattern is the repetition of a design in an orderly manner. They can be: A.Geometric B.Naturalistic C.Abstract Which form of pattern are each of the pictures to the right?
