Diploma of Nursing 1.1 Overview of Professional Experience Placement The Professional Experience Placement (PEP) is a vital component of the course. It provides an important opportunity for students to apply nursing skills and nursing knowledge in real-life situations in a variety of clinical settings. Through the PEP, the student is expected to interact with all multidisciplinary team members and undertake Interprofessional learning opportunities. It is a major component of the Diploma of Nursing programme, with students completing 400 hours of placement in a variety of settings such as aged care, sub-acute care, and acute care. The duration of the first PEP is 120 hours and will be placed in an aged care facility. Further information about PEP requirements is explained in the Professional experience Placement Orientation guide for students and clinical educators. Students should read and understand the guide thoroughly before starting PEP. 1.2 Professional Experience Placement Tool (ANSAT Tool)1 This tool is used to determine and record a student's performance on placement and completed by the clinical educator. The student will be assessed against the NMBA Standards for Practice for Enrolled Nurses 2016 as a novice student in the clinical environment by a Clinical Educator who is a Registered Nurse This book details specific Nursing procedures which the student and assessor will demonstrate to assess student competence. During the placement, students will have formative and summative assessments. 1 https://www.ansat.com.au/#h.p_XWJmj4pysGJw Version 2 September 2021 P a g e 4 o f 64 E n h an c in g L i ve s th r o u g h Tr a in in g Legal entity: Health Careers International Pty Ltd | ABN: 59 106 800 944 | ACN: 106 800 944 | RTO ID: 21985 | CRICOS Provider Code: 03386G PEP Tool (ANSAT) Semester 1 HLT54121 - Diploma of Nursing Both formative and summative assessments will be recorded in different sections of the same tool. Students should keep this book with them during the PEP, and it is the responsibility of the student to get a signature from the Clinical educator/Nurse educator wherever required. The PEP ANSAT Tool is your evidence that you have attained the skills, with the required underpinning knowledge, to be able to fulfil your role as an Enrolled Nurse in a safe and appropriate manner. 1.3 Instruction To Clinical Educators The purpose of this assessment is to determine if a student is progressing along the knowledge and skill development continuum and achieving a satisfactory level of performance to advance to the next stage of the study. PEP is the setting in which the student must demonstrate several key competencies that will be formally assessed by the Clinical educator/Preceptor. The assessor is responsible for conducting a fair and valid assessment of a student nurse's capability and performance before declaring that the student nurse meets the required standards of practice. Students will be assessed in both formative and summative ways during the placement. Evidence of student’s performance: a) Nursing procedure demonstration and observation b) Recommendations and feedback from preceptors who have worked with the student c) Questioning/ scenario-based questioning d) Structured activities, or simulated activities e) Written records - case notes, progress notes, handover notes. Expected behaviours and practices performed at an excellent standard. Supportive cue rarely required. Well above the passing standard. Demonstrates greater independence on practice with a high safety priority. Exhibits a level of excellence/professionalism. Scoring rules a) Circle N/A (not assessed) ONLY if the student has not had an opportunity to demonstrate the behaviour. b) If an item is not assessed, it is not scored, and the total ANSAT score is adjusted for the missed item. c) Circle ONLY ONE number for each item. d) If a score falls between numbers on the scale, the higher number will be used to calculate a total. e) Evaluate the student’s performance against the MINIMUM practice level expected for their level of education. 1.11 Professional Experience Placement (PEP) Formative Assessment2 Formative assessment during PEP Formative assessment is intended to provide feedback to students on their progress but does not contribute to the final assessment outcome. The goal of formative assessment is to help students learn better by providing information on their clinical performance (strengths and areas for improvement) as well as strategies to help them improve. 2 https://www.ansat.com.au/home/assessment-manual Version 2 September 2021 P a g e 16 o f 64 E n h an c in g L i ve s th r o u g h Tr a in in g Legal entity: Health Careers International Pty Ltd | ABN: 59 106 800 944 | ACN: 106 800 944 | RTO ID: 21985 | CRICOS Provider Code: 03386G PEP Tool (ANSAT) Semester 1 HLT54121 - Diploma of Nursing Formative Assessment meeting a) Formative assessment meeting takes place mid-way through placement. b) The clinical educator should ensure they have sufficient evidence, e.g., specific examples of the level of performance. They may need to collaborate with other clinical staff. c) Progress toward competency is discussed and evaluated, and rating is recorded in the Formative Assessment. d) Educators can use the ANSAT behavioural cues while providing feedback to students, and they can be used to assist students to acquire important performance behaviours. e) If the student is not progressing towards satisfactory completion (2 – Marginal or 1 – Dependent) in any standard of practice, a student support strategy will be implemented. The purpose of a student support strategy is to ensure strategies are put in place to assist the student to improve their clinical performance, meeting the minimum clinical requirements for the summative assessment. f) A record of the meeting is documented in the comments section of the Formative Assessment feedback and signed and dated by both the student and the clinical educator.
