Overview As a standard practice, the management of automatic fire alarm systems shall not be the responsibility of the Salt Lake City Fire Department. Property owners, or their designated responsible parties, shall be responsible for the management of automatic alarm systems. This SOG shall provide a guideline for company officers and fire personnel to follow when alarm system management may be necessary. 2. Guideline a. Upon arrival personnel will locate the fire alarm control panel, determine the zone of origin, and investigate any conditions or hazards. b. If access to the fire alarm control panel is not readily available, the incident commander or company officer will determine if forcible entry is necessary prior to the arrival of a responsible party. (Force entry with any indication of smoke, fire, or water flow) c. If no fire conditions or hazards exist: i. The company officer shall have discretion to silence the alarm after investigation proves no significant hazards exist. ii. All efforts shall be made to locate a responsible party, notify them of the current status of the alarm, and request that they respond or have someone respond to reset the alarm. iii. If unable to locate a responsible party, the company officer has the discretion to silence the alarm or silence and reset the alarm, and then clear the scene. iv. The company officer shall notify dispatch of the status of the alarm upon clearing the scene. v. The company officer shall provide a detailed narrative in the NFIR report including the investigation findings, attempts to contact responsible parties, and condition of the panel upon clearing the scene. Company officers retain the discretion to leave the system in alarm to be managed by property owners or their designated responsible party. The company officer also shall retain discretion after confirmation that no hazard exists, to silence and even reset the alarm for the benefit of the building occupants. 04-26A Automatic Alarm System Management, Page 1 of 1
