Lipolysis
- The main product of lipolysis is glycerol and free fatty acids.
- After being released from adipocytes, glycerol is transported to the liver and converted to glucose or oxidized to produce energy, whereas free fatty acids are transported to the liver and other tissues, where they can be oxidized to produce energy or re-esterified to form triglycerides.
- The rate-limiting step of lipolysis in adipocytes is the phosphorylation of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) by protein kinase A.
