More Information
Epithelial tissues are classified based on the number of cell layers and the shape of the cell. Simple epithelia have one layer, and stratified epithelia have multiple layers. Furthermore, these layers can be squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-like), or columnar (tall and cylindrical).
Tips
A common mistake is to confuse pseudostratified columnar epithelium with stratified epithelium due to its appearance; pseudostratified means it appears to have multiple layers but actually does not.
