    Overview of the Circulatory System

    • The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, consists of the heart and blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body.
    • The main artery called the aorta serves as the trunk of the circulatory system, which then branches out into smaller arteries and ends in a network of tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
    • Oxygen is received in the lungs and sent into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide is released from the lungs when exhaling.
    • There are three types of circulation: pulmonary circulation (between the heart and lungs), systemic circulation (throughout the body), and coronary artery circulation (supplying oxygenated blood to the heart).
    • The heart is the central organ of the circulatory system, composed of four chambers: the right and left atria, and the right and left ventricles.
    • Arteries carry blood away from the heart, with three layers in their walls: tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica externa. Elastic arteries (like the aorta) handle the surge and contraction of blood, while muscular arteries (like the femoral and coronary arteries) transport blood to the rest of the body.
    • Arterioles are the smallest arteries that connect muscle arteries to capillaries.
    • Veins allow blood to return to the heart, with venules as the smallest veins and the tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica externa in their walls. Veins have less connective tissue and smooth muscle compared to arteries.
    • Valves in the veins help maintain blood flow in the right direction, preventing backflow due to gravity.
    • Blood consists of plasma (55% of blood volume), red blood cells (40-45%), white blood cells (1%), and platelets.
    • Red blood cells lack a nucleus and contain hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide from the body to the lungs.
    • White blood cells protect the body against infection and can be divided into five main categories: neutrophils, lymphocytes, basophils, eosinophils, and monocytes. Platelets are responsible for blood clotting.
