Definitions
- Accumulated Sick Time: starts from the employee's date of hire through date of separation.
- Administrative Leave:
- Excused time from work with pay
- Granted at the Sheriff's discretion for:
- Appearing for BSO employment interviews
- Full-time employees working excess hours
- For the good of BSO
- Nonessential employees during extreme weather or emergency situations
- Requires supervisory approval before use
- Not given in place of sick leave for exhausting accumulated sick leave
Anniversary Date
- Determined by the date of hire or change in personnel/pay status:
- 1st-15th of the month: anniversary date is the 1st day of that month
- 16th-last day of the month: anniversary date is the 1st day of the following month
Continuous Service
- Means employee service between date of hire and date of separation
- Excludes pay periods with unpaid status for half or more of assigned work hours
- Unpaid status does not break continuous service
- Employees rehired after separation (except layoff) are considered new employees for annual and sick leave purposes
- Persons reinstated from layoff list have prior continuous service preserved
Domestic Partners
- Two adults in a valid domestic partnership relationship
- Criteria and registration are established by Human Resources/Employee Benefits SOP
Good Standing
- Resignation with no charges pending and minimum two weeks' notification
Holiday Time
- Time given to employees required to work or whose regular day off falls on a BSO holiday
- Can be used for the same purpose as annual leave and is payable on separation
Immediate Family
- Includes spouse, county registered domestic partner, children, parents, stepparents, stepchildren, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren
Leave Year
- Base period for maintaining an employee's leave record
- Comprises 26 biweekly pay periods in a pay status
Pay Period
- BSO's 14 calendar day payroll period
Pay Status
- Employee receives payment for services performed or on paid leave time (annual, disability, administrative, etc.)
- Workers' Compensation payments alone do not constitute pay status
Shift Substitution
- Mutually agreed switching of shifts between two employees holding the same job titles in the same district/division
- Rules:
- Only pertains to hours actually worked
- Hour for hour substitution
- No exchanging pay with a substitute
- Only during the same pay period
- No working over 80 hours within the pay period as a result
- Requires written agreement and supervisor's approval
- Documented in memo form with signatures prior to initiating substitution
- Management reserves the right to approve or disapprove mutually agreed shift substitutions
