Drug and Alcohol Policy
- Spring Fire Department (SFD) aims to maintain a safe and efficient work environment by prohibiting alcohol and drug use.
- The policy applies to all members, applicants, and those representing SFD on its property, including vehicles and equipment.
- Members are prohibited from reporting to duty with alcohol in their system, consuming alcohol within 8 hours of reporting, possessing or using alcohol while on duty, or performing fire department related job functions.
- Members are prohibited from possessing, using, or being impaired by illegal drugs, or legal drugs that affect their ability to perform job duties.
- Members taking prescribed medications must notify Human Resources and provide written notice from their physician or pharmacist regarding potential impairment.
- SFD conducts 10-panel drug tests (marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, phencyclidine (PCP), and opiates) and may conduct more extensive testing if warranted.
- SFD may allow members using medical cannabis or THC as prescribed to continue employment as long as it doesn't impair their performance.
- Members refusing to submit to post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, or follow-up alcohol or drug tests will be terminated.
- Members testing positive for prohibited drugs, excluding medically prescribed THC, will be terminated.
- Tampering with drug tests will result in termination.
- Members possessing, transferring, or selling drugs will be terminated.
- Members convicted of a criminal drug or alcohol violation must immediately notify Human Resources upon release from custody.
