Basic Skills of a Group Leader
- Active listening: focus on the client's issue, understand content, non-verbal and underlying messages
- Empathy: see the client's world as they see it, understand client's subjective view while maintaining professional boundary
- Reflection: repeat the client's words to ensure understanding
- Questioning: use open-ended and closed-ended questions
- Asking for clarification: ask the client to restate what they said or restate what the counselor understood
- Modeling: model behaviors to shape norms, inhibit or disinhibit behaviors, and produce independent behavior in the group
- Linking: promote member-to-member interaction by pointing out common themes among members
- Interpretation: make statements to interpret an issue raised by clients
- Facilitating: help clients express issues openly, provide a safe and therapeutic environment, and provide support and enhance member involvement
- Encourager: use strategies to encourage clients to talk and open up more freely
- Blocking: stop excessive questions, unrelated issues, or anything that disrupts member privacy
- Confrontation: use open-ended and closed-ended questions
- Summarizing: summarize sessions to reinforce key points
- Terminating: manage the ending of a session or the entire counseling process
