Organization Size, Life Cycle & Decline

    • Organizations experience various stages throughout their lifespan, from initial growth to eventual decline.
    • Organizational size isn't always associated with success; smaller organizations can be agile and responsive in dynamic environments.
    • Larger organizations may benefit from economies of scale, global reach, and access to diverse markets.
    • Organizational size impacts structure: larger firms often have hierarchical, mechanistic structures, while smaller firms might employ flatter, organic structures.
    • Mergers and acquisitions can significantly impact an organization's value, sometimes creating more value and other times reducing it.

    Organizational Life Cycle

    • Organizations progress through a series of stages: Entrepreneurial, Collectivity, Formalization, and Elaboration.
    • Entrepreneurial Stage: Characterized by a small size, informal structure, focus on product/service creation, and heavily reliant on the founder's vision. A crisis stems from the need for leadership to manage growth.
    • Collectivity Stage: Growth is rapid, and employees are committed to the organization's mission. The structure is mostly informal but some procedures arise. Strong leadership is crucial. A crisis arises if delegation is needed
    • Formalization Stage: The organization enters a midlife phase, adopting bureaucratic characteristics. Rules, procedures, and control systems become paramount, along with a clear hierarchy. Decentralization may be used to manage coordination. Crisis: Too much red tape.
    • Elaboration Stage: The mature organization is large and bureaucratic, with extensive control systems. Managerial efforts focus on maintaining a team-oriented environment while preventing further bureaucratization. Innovation is often institutionalized through specialized departments. Crisis: Need for revitalization.

    Organizational Atrophy

    • A condition where a substantial, absolute decrease in an organization's resource base happens over time.
    • Causes include:
      • Organizational Atrophy: Overly bureaucratized, inefficient, and attached to past practices/structures.
      • Vulnerability: Inability to prosper in the environment, common among younger companies struggling to adapt to market shifts.
      • Environmental Decline or Competition: Reduced resources available to the organization force it to scale down operations or shift strategies to another field.

    Model of Decline Stages

    • The model outlines five stages of decline:
      • Blinded Stage: Missed signs of external or internal changes threatening long-term sustainability. Possible responses include tightening up operations or improving communication.
      • Inaction Stage: Leaders deny problems and try to convince employees that things are fine.
      • Faulty Action Stage: The organization tries to address problems without success, maybe through retrenchment or downsizing to fix a damaged system.
      • Crisis Stage: Organization finally acknowledges the decline, and experiences chaos and anger. Major reorganizations and restructuring take place.
      • Dissolution Stage: The decline is irreversible; the organization may be forced to shut down in an orderly manner.

    Downsizing Implementation

    • Communicate more, not less: Transparent and open communication is critical during organizational downsizing to manage employee uncertainty.
    • Provide assistance to displaced workers: Offer counseling, job placement services, and support to those laid off.
    • Help the survivors thrive: Help remaining employees adapt to the changing structure.

    Organizational Control Strategies

    • Bureaucracy: Relying on rules, hierarchies, and legitimate authority for control.
    • Market: Using prices, competition, and exchange relationships to guide and regulate behaviour.
    • Clan: Relying on tradition, shared values, beliefs, and trust to achieve control.
