    • Determinants of Personality
    • Personality Framework
    • Recent Developments in Personality and OB

    Meaning of Personality

    • Personality is a unique and relatively stable pattern of behavior, thoughts, and emotions.
    • Personality also defines stable behavior patterns and consistent internal states, affecting how individuals react and interact with others.

    Determinants of Personality

    • Biological Factors:
      • Heredity: Qualities determined at conception, inherited from parents (e.g., intelligence, temperament, diseases).
      • Physical Features: Height, weight, color, and physical appearance.
    • Family and Social Factors: Influenced by family, community, parents, peers, colleagues, and relationships.
    • Cultural Factors: Norms, beliefs, values, customs, rules, and regulations shared and transferred within a culture. Culture significantly impacts an individual's personality (e.g., Japanese culture emphasizes cooperation and teamwork).
    • Situational Factors: Factors impacting behavior responses may change depending on situations (e.g., a person's behavior at work differs from their behavior at home).

Personality Framework: The Big Five Personality Model

    • The Big Five model is the most widely used and well-known personality model. It explores the facets of personality.
    • Five basic dimensions underlie all other personality dimensions:
      • Extraversion: A tendency to enjoy the company of others; energetic, sociable, talkative, and enthusiastic (extroverts) vs. reserved, silent, and cautious (introverts).
      • Agreeableness: A tendency to be compassionate toward others; good-natured, cooperative, trusting, and helpful vs. suspicious and uncooperative.
      • Conscientiousness: A tendency to show self-discipline and reliability; well-organized, careful, self-disciplined, responsible vs. disorganized, impulsive, careless, and unreliable.
      • Neuroticism (Emotional Stability): The ability to withstand stress; calm, self-confident, and secure vs. nervous, anxious, depressed, and insecure.
      • Openness to Experience: A tendency to enjoy new experiences and new ideas; creative, imaginative, and broadly interested vs. simple, narrow interests, and comfort in the familiar.

How Big Five Traits Predict Behavior at Work

    • Extraversion: Predicts leadership emergence in groups; better in jobs needing interpersonal interaction due to enhanced social skills.
    • Conscientiousness: Consistently related to job performance due to persistence, attention to detail, and setting of high standards.
    • Emotional Stability: Related to job satisfaction and low stress levels, avoiding problems and danger.

    Other Personality Factors

    • Type A & B Personalities:

      • Type A: Hard workers, highly competitive, impatient, involved in conflicts, perform poorly in tasks requiring patience. Seeking challenging work and excelling in situations involving time pressure or solitary work.
      • Type B: Exhibit flexibility, relaxed approach to life, remain calm, excel in tasks needing accuracy, better suited to jobs needing interpersonal skills.
    • Machiavellianism: A personality trait involving willingness to manipulate others for personal gain; characterized by arrogance, viewing others as ethically weak, and prioritizing being feared over being loved. High Machs thrive in loosely structured environments.

    • Morning and Evening Persons: Individuals differ in energy levels depending on the time of day. Morning persons are most active early, while evening persons have peak energy later in the day/evening.
