Study Notes

Monthly Inspection

  • Park the loaded vehicle on flat level ground with wheels pointed straight and ensure parking brake is applied and wheels are chocked.
  • Inspect the gap between the Rubber Axle Stop and spring, which should be between 1/16” and 1/2”. If outside of this range, drive cautiously and re-measure.
  • If the gap is > 1/2”, place the vehicle out of service and contact CMF. If < 1/16” or the Rubber Axle Stop is touching, submit a defect report.

Brake Pads

  • Bendix ADB22X Disc brake pads must be replaced at 11mm (approximately 7/16”).
  • Meritor DiscPlus EX225 Disc brake pads must be replaced at 3mm (approximately 1/8”).

Jumper Studs and Glad Hands

  • Jumper studs are accessible below the driver's side cab door when the cab is nested.
  • Glad hands are located below the front bumper to assist with towing.

OnSpot Automatic Snow Chains

  • OnSpot automatic snow chains are on the rear axle.
  • Switch is located on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel.
  • The chains have a 5-second delay before activation.

Axles and Brakes

  • 20,000lb front axle and 27,000lb rear axle.
  • Parking brake locks up all wheels and has a 2nd actuator located on the officer's side dashboard.
  • Anti-lock disc air brakes on both front and rear axles.
  • 18.7cfm air compressor and 12v auxiliary air compressor behind the driver's seat.

Air System

  • Heated air dryer on the wet tank.
  • Stainless steel air storage tanks.
  • Air tank drain actuators located on the driver's side beside the wheel chock mount.

Front Suspension

  • When the vehicle is under stress, front springs flatten and then assume an "S" shape.
  • "S-buffers" in the front suspension stiffen the springs when compressed to reduce undesirable steering reaction during emergency braking.

Daily Inspection

  • Inspect for loose hardware of the S-Buffer Assembly.
  • Inspect welds and surrounding metal of the S-Buffer Assembly for cracks.
  • Look for signs of failure or tearing of the Rubber Axle Stop.
  • If cracks are found, submit a defect report.
  • If the Rubber Axle Stop is damaged, place the truck out of service and replace it.

Notifications

  • Notifications are accessible from the Menu screen.
  • Serious faults or messages will also appear on the Home screen.

HVAC and Other Features

  • HVAC controls are accessible from the Menu screen and are the same as the dashboard controls.
  • Do Not Move Truck feature is accessible from the Menu screen and enables specific identification of open doors or other warnings.
  • Timer feature is accessible from the Menu screen.
  • Diagnostics feature is accessible from the Menu screen and shows the status of various systems on the vehicle.
  • Rear Camera Screen is accessible from the Menu screen and defaults to this screen automatically when the transmission is in Reverse.

Handheld Cab Tilt Actuator

  • Serves single function to activate the selected function
  • Can be replaced by the toggle switch marked "activate" if unavailable

Locking Safety Arm

  • Located on driver's side lift cylinder
  • Stowed atop the frame rail beside the motor
  • Metal becomes HOT as motor compartment heats up – use gloves to handle
  • Held down by a rubber stopper during storage, may require effort to dislodge from storage

Pump Shift

  • In-cab signs of successful pump shift: indicator lights, Command Zone screen, speedometer rises
  • Pump panel signs of successful pump shift: Pump Engaged light, 3rd panel light, pressure rise on main discharge gauge, Auto light on pump primer

DPF Regeneration

  • Regeneration occurs when the operator creates correct conditions during travel or pumping operations, requiring sufficient exhaust flow and temperatures, speedometer >5mph, and no engine speed variations.
  • Regeneration can also be initiated manually by activating the DPF Regen switch while parked, with the DPF lamp illuminated.
  • Important: do not perform regen inside a building or while attached to an exhaust removal system, and maintain a minimum of 5 feet of clearance from the exhaust outlet.

Handheld Cab Tilt Actuator

  • Serves a single function to activate the selected function.
  • Plug in the handheld actuator to activate the function.
  • If not available, the toggle switch marked "activate" serves the same purpose.

Safety Arm

  • Located on the driver's side lift cylinder, stowed atop the frame rail beside the motor.
  • Metal becomes hot when the motor compartment heats up, so use gloves to handle.
  • No cables to pull or latches to operate, and held down by a rubber stopper during storage.
  • Drops into a pocket ahead of the wheel well, but be sure to verify the arm lands in the pocket to avoid damage.

Engine Compartment

  • Components include the turbo, air compressor, alternator, starter motor, power steering fluid reservoir, and air compressor.

Fluid Reservoirs

  • Power steering fluid reservoir located nearby.
  • Air compressor located nearby.
  • Motor oil fill and transmission dipstick and fill located nearby.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Diesel Particulate Filter

  • Vehicle is equipped with diesel exhaust fluid and a diesel particulate filter.
  • Regeneration switches, DPF and exhaust temp warnings, and diesel fuel level displayed on the dashboard gauge panel and in Command Zone display.

Diesel Fuel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid

  • Diesel fuel fills on both sides of the apparatus at the rear wheel well, with a 65-gallon capacity.
  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) has a 4.5-gallon tank, fills on the driver's side, and has a light blue cap.
  • DEF fluid level is displayed on the dashboard gauge panel and in Command Zone display.

Fuel Filling

  • To fill, open the fuel fill access on the driver's side, then pull down the spring-loaded cover to access the DEF tank cap.
  • Driver side fill is for diesel and DEF, while the officer side fill is for diesel only.

Complete daily inspection and perform physical inspection of spring for mechanical damage. Includes parking and positioning of vehicle, applying brakes, and inspecting gap between Rubber Axle Stop and spring.
