- The week focuses on leadership definitions, leadership vs. management, the importance of leaders, transactional and transformational leadership, and five types of leader power.

Leadership Definitions:
- Directing and coordinating the work of group members
- An interpersonal relationship where others comply willingly, not out of obligation
- Creating conditions for a team to be effective
- Influencing an organised group to achieve its goals

Leadership vs Management:
- Management involves efficiency, planning, paperwork, procedures, regulations, control, and consistency
- Leadership involves risk-taking, dynamism, creativity, change, and vision
- "Leaders do the right things; managers do things right."

Why Leaders Matter:
- Leaders provide vision and direction
- Leaders help keep groups organised
- Leaders influence group performance

Transactional and Transformational Leadership:
- Transactional leadership involves a transaction/exchange between leaders and followers
- Transformational leadership involves the ability of the leader bringing about significant change in followers and the organisation

Five Types of Leader Power:
- Types of power include Positional (legitimate, reward, coercive) and Personal (expert, referent) power
Leadership is both a Science/Art and Rational/Emotional
- Leadership skills involve analyzing and responding to situations
- Leaders vary in how they use reason, logic, inspiration, and passion
- Individual behaviours change when in a group setting
Legitimate Power
- Authority comes from formal positions within an organisation
- Rights, responsibilities, and prerogatives assigned to leadership positions
- Leadership roles involve setting goals, making decisions, and directing activities
Reward Power
- Authority to reward others
- Leaders can use rewards such as pay raises, promotions, and resources
- Rewards influence subordinate behaviour
Coercive Power
- Authority to punish or recommend punishment
- Opposite of reward power
- Can involve actions like firing, demotion, criticism, reprimands, or pay reductions.
Expert Power
- Results from special knowledge or skills
- Followers respect recommendations based on superior knowledge
- Expert power usually develops through experience
Referent Power
- Power derived from personality characteristics
- Others identify with, respect, and want to emulate a leader
- Power based on personal characteristics rather than title
- Strong identification with the leader
