Week 1 Introduction to Leadership & Power MGT355 – Leadership in Organisations Contents Leadership Definitions Leadership Vs Management Why Leaders Matter Transactional and Transformational Leadership Five Types of Leader Power Leadership Definitions Directing and coordinating the work of group members An interpersonal relation in which others comply because they want to, not because they have to Creating conditions for a team to be effective The process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals Leadership is both a Science/Art and Rational/Emotional Skills in analyzing and responding to situations vary greatly among leaders Reason and logic, inspiration and passion We tend to act differently when we are alone and when we are in a group Leadership Vs Management Management suggests words like: - efficiency, planning, paperwork, procedures, regulations, control, consistency Leadership suggests words like: - risk taking, dynamic, creativity, change, vision To us an adage, ‘Leaders do the right things Vs Managers do the things right’ Why Leaders Matter They provide vision and direction They help in keeping groups orderly They can affect group performance Transactional and Transformational Leadership Transactional Leadership – a transaction or exchange process between leaders and followers. Rights, responsibilities and prerogatives accrue to anyone holding a formal leadership position Set goals, make decisions and direct activities Reward Power Authority to bestow rewards on other people Appointed leaders may have access to rewards such as pay increases, promotions, physical resources Influences subordinate’s behavior Coercive Power Authority to punish or recommend punishment Opposite of reward power Right to fire, demote, criticize, reprimand or withdraw pay raises Expert Power Results from special knowledge or skill Followers go along with recommendations because of his/her superior knowledge Usually gained from experience Referent Power Comes from personality characteristics that command identification, respect and admirations so that others want to emulate the person Dependent on personal characteristics rather than title Strong identification with leader Formative Task To be read and completed on Moodle
