Introductory Genetics
- Genetics studies heredity and variation.
- Genes are the hereditary units passed from one generation to the next.
What is Genetics?
- Genetics is the biological branch dealing with heredity and variation.
- Genes are the units of heredity, passed from generation to generation.
Early Ideas About Heredity
- Biological heredity is evident in the resemblance between parents and children.
- Sexual reproduction was already known to be involved in human and animal procreation.
- However, the exact mechanism of passing hereditary traits was unclear.
Genetics Theories
-
Pangenesis: Inherited characteristics are passed by small particles (pangenes) from all parts of the body to the offspring. The process occurs through the blood vessels.
- Proposed by Darwin
-
Lamarckism: Traits acquired during an organism's lifetime can be passed on to offspring.
- Example: A giraffe stretching its neck to reach higher leaves would have offspring with longer necks.
-
Preformation: The entire organism is pre-formed in the sperm or egg, and development is simply the unfolding of this pre-existing miniature organism.
- A miniature human (homunculus) was thought to be contained inside sperm.
-
Epigenesis: Development occurs through gradual unfolding and differentiation from a simple beginning.
- There is no pre-formed miniature organism.
- Tissues and organs develop gradually through transformations.
- Proposed by Wolff and von Baer, who discredited preformationism, pangenesis and lamarckism.
Germ Plasm Theory
- Proposed by Weismann.
- Differentiates between germ cells (for reproduction) and somatic cells (for body function).
- Changes in somatic cells aren't inherited, as they are not part of the germ cell line.
- Germ cells contain heritable information.
Preformation
- The zygote contains all the necessary material for development.
- Differentiation into various body parts occurs through cell proliferation.
- Preformationists observed a miniature figure (homunculus) in sperm, suggesting the entire body was already present.
Homunculus
- A homunculus was thought to be a tiny, fully-formed human inside a sperm cell.
Epigenesis
- Development occurs through a series of transformations, starting from a basic form (e.g., a zygote).
- The developing organism gradually gains complexity and differentiation.
Conclusions
- Genetic information (DNA) interacting with the environment guides organism development.
- Epigenesis is more accurate than preformation
- Organisms are not pre-formed in the zygote.
