Study Notes
Introduction to Muscular System
- The muscular system is a crucial part of the human body, responsible for movement.
- The notes cover various aspects of the muscular system, including muscles of the thigh, posterior and anterior fascial compartments of the thigh, popliteal fossa, and the leg (anterior, lateral, and posterior compartments).
- Also included are muscles of the gluteal region, and associated nerves and arteries.
Muscles of the Anterior Compartment of the Thigh
- The quadriceps femoris muscle consists of four muscles: rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis.
- The quadriceps femoris is the primary extensor of the knee joint.
- The femoral nerve supplies the quadriceps femoris muscle.
Muscles of the Medial Compartment of the Thigh
- Muscles in this compartment include adductor longus, adductor brevis, and adductor magnus.
- These muscles adduct the thigh at the hip joint.
- The obturator nerve supplies these muscles.
Muscles of the Posterior Compartment of the Thigh
- Biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus are the muscles in this compartment.
- The sciatic nerve supplies these muscles.
Popliteal Fossa
- The popliteal fossa is a diamond-shaped space located behind the knee.
- Key structures in this area include the popliteal artery, popliteal vein, and the tibial nerve, which are located deep within the popliteal fossa.
- The popliteal artery is the deepest structure in the fossa, while the vein is intermediate, and the tibial nerve is more superficial.
Muscles of the Leg (Anterior, Lateral, and Posterior Compartments)
- Anterior: Extensor digitorum longus, and extensor hallucis longus.
- Lateral: Peroneus longus, and peroneus brevis
- Posterior: Superficial group includes gastrocnemius, plantaris, and soleus. Deep group includes popliteus, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, and tibialis posterior.
- Nerves include the deep peroneal nerve (anterior), superficial peroneal nerve (lateral), and tibial nerve (posterior)
Muscles of the Gluteal Region
- The gluteal muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus) are important for hip movement.
- The gluteus maximus is the largest and most superficial muscle of the buttock. It is associated with the inferior gluteal nerve.
- The gluteus medius and minimus are located beneath the gluteus maximus and are primarily associated with the superior gluteal nerve
- The sciatic nerve runs through the gluteal region.
Clinical Notes on Intramuscular Injections
- The gluteus maximus is a large muscle, and its thickness makes it a good site for intramuscular injections.
- To avoid injury to the sciatic nerve, injections should be given into the upper outer quadrant of the buttock.
Additional Structures
- The femoral artery, a major artery of the leg, is located just inferior to the inguinal ligament, within the femoral triangle.
- The popliteal artery is located in the popliteal fossa, behind the knee.
- The dorsalis pedis artery, found on the dorsal aspect of the foot.
- The posterior tibial artery, which is located along the medial side of the ankle.
