Study Notes
Introduction to Geography
- Geography is the study of the physical features of the Earth and how they impact human activities.
Theme 1: Location
- There are two types of location: relative and absolute.
- Relative location describes where a place is in relation to another place (e.g., the airport is 3.5 miles from the house).
- Absolute location describes the exact position of a place on Earth using coordinates like latitude and longitude (e.g., 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W for New York City).
Theme 2: Place
- A place is a combination of physical and human characteristics working together.
- Physical characteristics of a place include mountains, beaches, valleys, deserts, climate, and weather.
- Human characteristics of a place include cities, towns, and the way people use the land.
Theme 3: Region
- Regions are locations that share common characteristics.
- Examples of regions include time zones (e.g., Eastern Time Zone and Pacific Time Zone in the United States).
- Geographic features (e.g., the Sahara desert, the Appalachian Mountains) can define regions.
- Regions can also be grouped by languages spoken by the inhabitants.
Theme 4: Movement
- People move for better job opportunities, education, and living conditions.
- Movement (or migration) can lead to diversity in a new location.
- The spread of culture and information can lead to new ideas forming.
Theme 5: Human-Environment Interaction
- Human activities can impact the environment (e.g., building homes and cities changes natural landscapes).
- Environmental conditions (e.g., climate, weather, natural resources) can change human activities (e.g., agriculture).
