The Five Themes of Geography July 16, 2024 Agenda ー Introduction to Geography ー Theme 1: Location ー Theme 2: Place ー Theme 3: Region ー Theme 4: Movement ー Theme 5: Human-Environment Interaction ー Importance of Understanding Geography ー Conclusion What is Geography? Geography is the study of the physical features of the Earth and how they impact human activities. By understanding geography, we learn how natural formations like mountains and rivers helped people survive in the past. Theme 1: Location There are 2 types of location Describes where a place is in relation to another place. Relative Location ー Example: The airport is 3.5 miles from the house. ー Example: The park is half a mile from the school. Describes the exact position of a place on Earth. Absolute Location ー Uses coordinates like latitude and longitude. ー Example: 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W for New York City. Theme 2: Place The physical and human characteristics of a Location Physical characteristics such as mountains, beaches, valleys, and deserts. Physical characteristics include the climate and weather of a location. Example: hot, cold, humid, or dry. Human characteristics include cities, towns, and the way people use the land. A place is a combination of physical and human characteristics working together. Theme 3: Region Regions- locations that share common characteristics. Time Zones Ex: Eastern Time Zone and Pacific Time Zone in the United Geographic Features States are different Regions Languages Ex: The Sahara desert, The Appalachian Mountains. These Regions can be grouped by are Regions the languages spoken by the inhabitants. Theme 4: Movement ー People move for better job opportunities, education, and Reasons for Movement living conditions. What is a reason someone you know has moved? ____________________________________________ ー Movement (a.k.a Migration) can lead to diversity Impact on Locations in a new location. This means different people can move to the same place. ー The spread of culture information can lead to new ideas forming. Theme 5: Human-Environment Interaction Human Impact on Environment -Humans build homes and cities which change natural landscapes. -Environmental conditions like climate, Environmental Impact on weather and natural resources change Humans human activities. Ex: agriculture Which theme do you think is the most important to learn about? Why?
