Honor Guard Procedure
- This procedure details the Honor Guard's functions, membership, and procedures for various ceremonies.
Policy
- The Bexar County Sheriff's Honor Guard recognizes active and retired deputies who die on or off-duty, as well as officers from other agencies killed in the line of duty.
- Active duty deputies receiving awards or promotions, and deputies retiring are also honored.
Procedures
- Honor Guard participation involves ceremonies requested by or directed by the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, or a designee.
- These ceremonies include: funerals, sheriff's office graduations, departmental awards, promotions, retirements, and other ceremonies.
- For a deputy killed in the line of duty: Honor Guard, Colors, Taps, Honor Watch, and the folding and presentation of the Texas flag (unless the deputy was a former military member).
- For an officer from another agency killed in the line of duty : Two Honor Guard members, plus Deputies of the Traffic Safety Unit(if available).
Death Under Less Than Honorable Conditions
- For deaths under less honorable conditions, the Sheriff's office does not provide any assistance or honors.
Honor Guard Requests
- Requests for services are made in writing to the Office of the Sheriff or the Honor Guard Supervisor.
- Family members will forward requests through the Supervisor, for approval.
Membership in Honor Guard

This is a voluntary organization.

Any sworn member of the department can join.

Membership is apart from regular duty assignments.

All members must be willing to participate in local funerals for officers killed in the line of duty.

Member requirements

Compensation
- Compensatory time off is provided while participating in Honor Guard ceremonies.

- Administrative assignment for out of town ceremonies.
- Per-diem pay, if applicable.
Uniforms and Equipment
- The Sheriff's Office provides uniformed equipment, uniforms, and transportation necessary for Honor Guard services.
- Any personal items are the responsibility of the member.
