- The policy applies to all full-time Spring Fire Department members in good standing with one year of service.
- Members must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university.
- The degree program must be relevant to the member's current position, rank, or career path within the organization.
- Tuition reimbursement is limited to $425.00 per instructional hour, up to $3,825.00 per semester, and $10,200.00 annually.
- The department will reimburse tuition, books, and other fees directly associated with the course within the degree plan.
- Reimbursement is not available for late fees, travel expenses, out-of-district fees, parking fees, financial fees, or other fees not directly associated with the course.
- Reimbursement will not be used for tuition and fees if members are receiving assistance from other sources, such as scholarships, grants, and other subsidy programs.
- Members must submit a Tuition Reimbursement Application for approval, which includes a cost estimate, members' performance evaluations, and course information.
- Members will be limited to 9 hours per standard semester session and 3 hours per special semester session.
- Members must initiate the approval process prior to enrolling in the course.
- Reimbursable expenses must be submitted for application within 60 days of the end of the semester.
- Reimbursable expenses require an official grade record and itemized receipts that demonstrate that the course was completed with a grade of "C" or better or a "P" Pass/Fail.
- Members who have received a formal disciplinary action are ineligible for tuition reimbursement for a defined period.
Service Restitution
- The department invests financially in the professional development of its members.
- The service restitution threshold is met when the department contributes over $7,500.00 toward the training and development of a member.
- Members commit to serving the department for 24 months following the activation of a service restitution schedule.
- Members who do not complete the 24-month service restitution are responsible for a percentage of the tuition reimbursement.
- Each time a member exceeds the $7,500.00 threshold; their service restitution will be extended by 12 months after the initial 24 months of service.
- Employment with Spring Fire Department is at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without notice or cause.
