Study Notes
Voluntary Carbon Credits
- A credit equals the offset of one tonne of CO2, through the implementation of a development project managed by a third party.
- One tonne of CO2 = 1 Carbon credit.
- Two types of carbon credits:
- CER (Certified Emission Reduction): issued by the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) Executive Board for emission reductions achieved by CDM projects and verified by a Designated Operational Entity (DOE) under the Kyoto protocol rules.
- VER (Verified Emission Reduction): verified emission reduction outside of the Kyoto Protocol.
- Two ways to create a Carbon credit:
-
Tech Solutions: using technologies or new processes to reduce the environmental impact of a human need with fewer resources. Two kinds:
- Avoidance of emissions: reduces GHG emissions from essential human activities (e.g., wind, solar, biogas, and thermal efficiency).
- Carbon sink: removes GHG emissions through technologies (e.g., geo-sink, ocean-sink). Problems include eutrophication, and thermal imbalance.
-
Nature-Based Solutions: protect and enrich ecosystems. Two kinds:
- Avoidance of emissions: protecting ecosystems from human activity, preserving biodiversity. Example: REDD+.
- Carbon sink: regenerative activities that increase soil and biodiversity in an ecosystem, storing CO2. Example: Agro-forestry, wetland restoration, and forest restoration.
-
Tech Solutions: using technologies or new processes to reduce the environmental impact of a human need with fewer resources. Two kinds:
- 170 typologies of Carbon credits (or methodologies): Examples include renewable energy, industrial efficiency, fleet efficiency, and others.
Technology Solution
- Technologies or new processes that help achieve a desired outcome with reduced resources versus standard methods.
Nature-Based Solution
- Methods or processes that protect and enhance natural systems to capture and store carbon.
Generation Process
- Process used for obtaining carbon credits.
- Includes baseline and stakeholder engagement, PDD and project validation, project implementation, impact monitoring, verification & credit issuance and selling carbon credits and stages of the process shown in different boxes and steps from the starting point of the process
Benefits of Carbon Credits
- Nations: Use credits to meet emission reduction targets under international agreements, like the Kyoto Protocol.
- Companies: Offset carbon footprint to improve CSR image, and improve public relations. Other reasons include certification, reputation improvement and environmental and social benefit improvement.
Key Stakeholders
- CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) & REGISTRY: Main actors in the carbon credit system.
- Consumers: Consumers can impact the price and quantity of credits through the market.
- Institutions: Designated National Authorities (DNAs).
- Technological and logistic providers: Companies providing necessary technologies and logistics for carbon credit creation and usage.
- Companies: Involved in various technological and natural activities that provide carbon credits.
- Research Organizations: They participate in generating knowledge and producing solutions for carbon projects.
- NGOs: Non-governmental organizations can advocate for solutions to reduce GHG emissions.
- Community: Local stakeholder group that can influence projects and outcomes.
Assurance Providers
- Validation bodies used for verifying and assessing standards for carbon credits and issues.
- Includes standard setters and accreditation bodies.
- DNA: National Designated Authority (in COP). they validates jobs & set national goals.
Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)
- System for converting inventory data into environmental impact indexes.
- Impact Indicators: categories related to environmental effects: climate change, human toxicity, ozone layer depletion, terrestrial/freshwater/marine eutrophication, mineral depletion.
- Impact Categories: classes summarizing environmental concerns –human health, ecosystems, and resources.
- Midpoint impacts: are transformed into end-point impacts, which measure harm and damage.
LCI Results
- Midpoint Impact Categories: measures impacts on different environmental aspects.
- Endpoint Impact Categories: measures damage or harm from impacts.
Carbon Classification
- Classification: Selection and assignment of environmental impacts/effects.
- Normalization and Weighting: Processes for achieving standard-based indicators.
Measuring Carbon
- Uses equivalence factors to calculate the total impact of different substances on environmental factors.
- Characterization factors (CF): factors used to measure emission's impact.
- Global Warming Potential (GWP): evaluates the impact of different greenhouse gases on global warming.
Policy Makers
- UNFCCC, CDM & MEA (Mechanism for a contribution by the financial contribution of a financial institution like a bank).
