Entrepreneurship and Project Management - Lecture 06 - Ideate Phase
- Phase 3: Ideate - Focuses on idea generation. Translate problems into solutions, exploring diverse and numerous ideas to go beyond obvious solutions.
- Objective of Ideate Phase - To generate as many ideas as possible; the aim is to think "outside the box" and find innovative solutions to a problem.
- Winston Churchill Quote - "The only way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas."
-
Essential Ideation Principles
- Defer Judgment: Avoid evaluating ideas during the generation phase.
- Encourage Wild Ideas: Embrace unconventional concepts.
- Build on Others' Ideas: Encourage collaboration and creative synergy.
- Stay Focused on the Topic: Keep brainstorming relevant to the problem.
- Be Visual: Using visuals can aid in idea generation.
Ways to Unleash Creativity
- Reward Creativity: Acknowledging and rewarding creative ideas motivates further innovation.
- Creative Working Space: A conducive environment fosters originality.
- Collaboration and Co-creation: Encouraging teamwork stimulates diverse viewpoints and builds upon others' ideas.
Ideation Methods - Divergent and Convergent Thinking
-
Divergent Method - Generates a wide range of ideas, e.g., initial exploration, problem brainstorming, sharing brainstorming. Examples include:
- Brainwriting: A systematic approach to building ideas.
- Problem Brainstorming (Nyaka): A method that explores various problems in a customer journey or work process to better understand problems and prioritize hierarchical ideas.
- Sharing Brainstorming (NHK method): Members build ideas by sharing and building on ideas from other group members. This process fosters collective creativity.
- SCAMPER: A technique using these seven words/prompts to stimulate ideation: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse.
-
What If?: Explores innovative ideas, and concept improvements, by asking "what if" questions to challenge existing concepts and encourage creative solutions. Examples of "what if" questions include:
- Scarcity/Abundance: What if a car can run without petrol? What if you have unlimited budget to redesign a website?
- Extreme Simplicity: What if the army fights with no soldiers?
- Opposite: What if your mobile phone runs to you instead of you running to it?
-
Convergent Method - Consolidates and narrows down ideas, e.g., Prioritization map, Affinity map, Idea evaluation.
Procedure for Brainwriting
- Define the problem.
- Each person brainstorms three ideas within two minutes.
- Pass the paper to the person on the left to build on or add to existing ideas.
- Allow three minutes.
Procedure for Problem Brainstorming (Nyaka)
- Identify the problem from a customer journey or work process.
- Define all the problems and list on the left side of a line.
- Define solutions to the listed problems. and list these on the right side of a line.
- Create a hierarchy of issues and solutions.
Procedure for Sharing Brainstorming (NHK)
- Define the problem.
- Each participant writes down five ideas on separate cards.
- In groups of five, each person shares one idea from their card. Others build upon the shared idea.
- Ideas are repeatedly shared around the group until the table has many ideas.
- Group these ideas into meaningful categories.
Procedure for SCAMPER
- Select the idea/concept/existing product to apply the SCAMPER method.
- Facilitator leads the team to ideate outside the box by asking SCAMPER-based questions.
- Generate multiple ideas based on the questions.
- Analyze and prioritize ideas.
- Select ideas for further development.
Procedure for What If?
- Select the idea/concept/existing product to apply the "what if" method.
- Facilitator leads the team by asking "what if" type questions.
- Add more "what if" questions as necessary.
- Create as many ideas based on the questions.
- Analyze and prioritize ideas.
