- Communication existed in the Philippines before the Spanish colonization in 1521.
- Pre-colonial Filipinos used tree bark for writing and colored tree sap as ink.
- Town criers, or umalohokan, announced laws and policies in barangays by walking around and making proclamations.
Different Kinds of Communication
- Spoken or Verbal Communication: based on spoken words, using the human voice. Examples include phone calls, radio broadcasts, speeches, and lectures.
- Non-Verbal Communication: includes facial expressions, hand and body movements, and gestures.
- Written Communication: based on text and numbers. Examples include letters, notes, flyers, invoices, receipts, books, emails, poetry, and websites.
- Visual Communication: relies on lines, colors, shapes, and forms to convey a message. Utilizes elements of art and design to enhance or emphasize the message. Includes examples like billboards, posters, paintings, photographs, dances, plays, and films.

- Print Media: includes newspapers, books, flyers, magazines, birthday tarpaulins, board games, and komiks.
- Broadcast Media: Used for "one-to-many" messages, transmitted through a one-way form of communication where the receiver generally cannot comment or provide feedback. Examples include TV, radio, and emergency announcements.

- Noise: anything in the message that is unintended by the sender but is transmitted to the receiver.
