Study Notes
The Brain's Structure and Function
- The brain has three major parts: Brain Stem, Cerebellum, and Cerebrum.
- Brain Stem (medulla oblongata) connects the spinal cord and brain, responsible for:
- Breathing
- Heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Food digestion
- Cerebellum coordinates:
- Voluntary muscle movements
- Maintaining posture, balance, and equilibrium
Cerebrum and its Functions
- Cerebrum is responsible for:
- Speech
- Analytical thinking
- Problem-solving
- Senses
- Cerebrum has four lobes:
- Frontal Lobe: thinking, planning, problem-solving, emotions, behavioral control, and decision making
- Parietal Lobe: receiving and processing sensory inputs (touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain)
- Occipital Lobe: vision, visual processing, color identification
- Temporal Lobe: hearing, learning, and feelings
Neurons and Cerebral Cortex
- The neuron is the basic working unit of the brain, designed to transmit information to other nerve cells, muscles, or gland cells.
- Cerebral Cortex is divided into two hemispheres:
- Right Hemisphere: intuitive, emotional, creative
- Left Hemisphere: organized, logical, realistic
