    Study Notes

    Thigh Muscles

    • Psoas major muscle: originates from 1-12th thoracic vertebral body, 2-transverse processes, bodies and intervertebral discs of all lumbar vertebrae, and 3- tendinous arches attached to sides of vertebral bodies, and inserts into lesser trochanter with iliacus muscle.
    • Iliacus muscle: originates from upper 2/3 of iliac fossa, inserts into lesser trochanter with psoas major, and is supplied by the femoral nerve, acting as the main and powerful flexor of the hip joint.

    Quadriceps Muscle

    • Consists of four heads: Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis, Vastus medialis, and Vastus intermedius.
    • Origin:
      • Rectus femoris: straight head from anterior inferior iliac spine, reflected head from depression above the acetabulum.
      • Vastus lateralis: linear origin from lateral part of intertrochanteric line, root of greater trochanter, lateral margin of gluteal tuberosity, and lateral lip of linea aspera.
      • Vastus medialis: linear origin from medial part of intertrochanteric line, spiral line, and medial lip of linea aspera.
      • Vastus intermedius: originates from the front and lateral surfaces of upper two-thirds of the shaft of the femur.
    • Insertion: forms quadriceps tendon, inserted into base, medial and lateral borders of patella, then prolonged into tibial tuberosity via ligamentum patellae.
    • Nerve supply: femoral nerve.
    • Action: extensor of the knee joint and flexor of the hip joint through rectus femoris.

    Other Thigh Muscles

    • Articularis genu: originates from the anterior surface of the lower part of the shaft of the femur, inserts into upper medial surface of the shaft of the tibia, and is supplied by the femoral nerve.
    • Pectineus muscle: originates from pectineal surface of superior pubic ramus, inserts into upper half of line in back of femur (between lesser trochanter and linea aspera), and is supplied by a double nerve supply from the anterior division of the obturator nerve and femoral nerve.
    • Sartorius muscle: originates from anterior superior iliac spine, inserts into upper part of medial surface of the tibia, and is supplied by the femoral nerve.

    Compartments of Thigh

    • Divided into three compartments by three intermuscular septa:
      • Anterior compartment: contains quadriceps femoris, sartorius, pectineus, psoas major, and iliacus, and is supplied by the femoral nerve.
      • Medial compartment: contains adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus (adductor part), gracilis, and pectineus, and is supplied by the obturator nerve.
      • Posterior compartment: contains hamstrings and is supplied by the sciatic nerve.
