    Study Notes

    Anatomy: Heart & Great Vessels

    • The heart is a vital organ located in the mediastinum, between the lungs, bounded by the sternum and the vertebral column.
    • The heart is divided into superior and inferior sections. Inferior sections are further divided into anterior, middle, and posterior sections.
    • The heart has four chambers: right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle.
    • The heart has four surfaces: sternocostal, diaphragmatic, right pulmonary, and left pulmonary.
    • The heart has four borders: right, left, and lower heart border. The right border is largely the right atrium, the left border largely the left ventricle, and the lower border involves both right and left ventricles, and to a lesser extent the right atrium.

    Heart Layers

    • The heart is enclosed in a fluid-filled membranous sac called the pericardium.
    • The pericardium has two layers: fibrous and serous pericardium.
    • The fibrous pericardium is a strong outer layer that anchors the heart.
    • The serous pericardium has two layers: parietal and visceral layer.
    • The parietal and visceral layers are separated by a thin film of fluid that reduces friction between the heart and its surrounding tissues.
    • The heart wall itself has three layers: epicardium (visceral layer of serous pericardium), myocardium, and endocardium.

    Heart Valves

    • The heart has four valves to ensure unidirectional blood flow.
    • Atrioventricular valves: tricuspid and mitral.
    • Semilunar valves: pulmonary and aortic.
    • The valves open and close in response to pressure changes.

    Cardiac Cycle

    • The cardiac cycle involves two pumps working in parallel (simultaneously) but at two differing pressures: pulmonary and systemic.
    • Atria receive blood from great vessels.
    • Ventricles pump blood out into great vessels.

    Coronary Circulation

    • The heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the coronary arteries (left and right).
    • The right coronary artery branches supply parts of the right side of the heart.
    • The left coronary artery branches supply parts of the left side of the heart.
    • Coronary veins drain deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle.

    Pericardial Sinuses

    • Two pericardial sinuses (transverse and oblique) are crucial in clinical settings for identifying the coronary arteries during bypass procedures.
