Agriculture
- The word agriculture is derived from Latin words meaning soil and cultivation.
- Agriculture involves growing crops, fruits, vegetables, flowers and rearing livestock.
- Globally, 50% of people are involved in agricultural activity. Two-thirds of India's population relies on agriculture.
- Suitable soil and climate are crucial for agricultural success. Areas with suitable factors for crop growth typically have high levels of agricultural activity.
Types of Economic Activities
- Agricultural activity is a primary economic activity. These involve the extraction and production of natural resources.
- Secondary economic activities process these resources. This includes manufacturing, processing, and creating finished products (like bread from wheat).
- Tertiary economic activities support both primary and secondary sectors through services. This includes transportation, trade, banking, and insurance.
Types of Farming
-
Subsistence Farming: Practiced to meet the needs of the farmer's family or community. Uses little technology and relies on household labor for small-scale output.
- Intensive Subsistence Farming: Involves cultivating small plots of land intensively using a lot of labor. Favorable climate and fertile soil allows multiple crops per year. Rice is commonly grown.
- Primitive Subsistence Farming: A traditional form of intensive farming, often practiced in densely populated areas of South, Southeast, and East Asia.
-
Commercial Farming: Involves producing crops and livestock for sale in markets. Large-scale operations, with considerable use of machinery and technology.
- Commercial Grain Farming: Growing wheat and maize for commercial sale. Often practiced in areas with large farms and generally a sparsely populated setting.
- Mixed Farming: Growing food and fodder crops while also raising livestock.
- Plantation Agriculture: Large-scale cultivation of a single crop (such as tea, coffee, sugarcane) often in tropical or subtropical regions requiring considerable labor and capital.
Shifting Cultivation
- This is a type of farming practiced in areas with high rainfall.
- A plot of land is cleared, trees are burned, ashes mixed with soil and crops are grown.
- When land loses fertility, the cultivator moves to a new plot. Also known as "slash and burn" agriculture.
Nomadic Herding
- This involves moving livestock from place to place for grazing.
- Herders follow defined routes depending on the availability of water and fodder (food for animals).
- Common animals include sheep, camels, goats and yaks.
Major Crops
- Rice: A significant staple food in tropical and subtropical regions. Thrives in wet areas with high temperature and humidity.
- Wheat: A significant crop, requiring moderate temperatures, rainfall, and sunlight. Grown extensively in various countries across the world.
- Maize: Also known as corn, requires moderate temperature , rainfall and lots of sunshine.
- Millets: A hardy crop that needs low rainfall and high temperature.
- Jute: A leading fiber crop, typically grown in tropical regions benefiting from heavy rainfall, heavy humidity, and warm temperature, also known as the "Golden Fiber".
- Coffee: Grown in warm, wet climates often on hill slopes.
- Tea: Needs a cool climate and consistent high rainfall.
Agricultural Development
- Increasing food production to meet the needs of a growing population.
- Methods involved include: Increasing the farmed areas, the number of crops grown, improving irrigation methods, using high-yielding crop varieties, and use of fertilizers. Mechanization is also a key aspect.
- Improving agricultural techniques, and storage facilities are included in the broader plan.
Additional Notes
- Agricultural practices and needs differ significantly in developed and developing countries.
- Factors like resources, land availability, climate, and labor play a role in agricultural choices and outcomes.
