Functions of Cranial Nerves
-
Olfactory Nerve: Responsible for the sense of smell, transmitting sensory information from the nasal cavity to the brain.
-
Optic Nerve: Responsible for vision, transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain.
-
Oculomotor Nerve: Controls most of the eye's movements, including constriction of the pupil and maintaining an open eyelid.
-
Trochlear Nerve: Controls the superior oblique muscle, which is involved in downward and lateral eye movement.
-
Trigeminal Nerve: Responsible for sensation in the face and head, as well as motor functions such as chewing.
-
Abducens Nerve: Controls the lateral rectus muscle, allowing for lateral movement of the eye.
-
Facial Nerve: Controls muscles of facial expression and provides taste sensation from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
-
Vestibulocochlear Nerve: Responsible for hearing and balance, transmitting information from the inner ear to the brain.
-
Glossopharyngeal Nerve: Involved in taste from the posterior one-third of the tongue and contributes to swallowing and the gag reflex.
-
Vagus Nerve: Has a wide range of functions, including regulating heart rate, digestive tract movement, and respiratory rate, as well as controlling muscles for speech.
-
Accessory Nerve: Controls the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, contributing to shoulder movement and head rotation.
-
Hypoglossal Nerve: Controls the muscles of the tongue, essential for speech and swallowing functions.
